    Default Strage gate behaviour

I don't know if it's a bug or something, but in rome (EB and other mods) I used to take the walls of a city with a siege tower, then kill the resistance and take control of the gates, so that any enemy unit outside wouldn't enter after I moved my troops in. It's specially useful when the enemy has reinforcements, but then I tried this a few times in SS, and even though I have control of the gates the enemy troops can still open them and enter without a problem. Anyone can explain this to me? Thks...

This has been removed in M2TW / nerfed. You need to dedicate troops to hold that gate as you can't lock it and keep the enemy out.

Trust me its still possible. You need to have elite troops or much cannonfodder at that gate and a (light) cavalry to charge for the town center but its possible.
I once sacrificed an entire field army to keep the AI busy while I took the town square with a few selected troops. Plan didn't work as I was beaten in the last 10 seconds by the returning troops but thats how it should be. The "bar the gates" tactics makes for too easy wins because of the selected stupidity of the AI.

It is still quite possible to do this. Unfortunately if you play on larger units sizes and have a full stack army it is almost impossible to get all your units thru the gate in time.

Usually I divert my cavalry and raid the reinforcing enemy to slow them down so my army can make it inside. You pretty much have to put put every unit on double time march as soon as you start the battle and the enemy holding the city probably needs to be less than 5 units otherwise you won't be able to get thru the gate and defenders in time. When it works it works very well... the problem is if you don't get all your men thru the gate and are trapped on both sides of the walls.
