Help - Game becoming unplayable

First I would like to say I love this game, so far it is what I wanted Empire to be in leaps and bounds, shame they did not include a generic grand campaign as well with the America's and India in also though.

The first day I had this, perfect, nothing to complain about.

The second day, yesterday, and today, it keeps crashing with no error or explanation. I really cannot think of anything I have done to make this happen, it is like the game has decided it doesn't like me. I even lowered all the settings to see if that was making it crash - it seems to just crash anyway. This happens in battles, naval battles and the campaign map, it just freezes and the screen goes grey forcing me to restart my computer.

Can anybody help?

In addition I seem to have narrowed it down to only crashing during the Napoleonic campaigns.

Scratch that - it's just happened to me during the coalition campaign now too. This is unbelievable. All I can play are the battles.

Verify your game cache integrity in Steam.

I've done that twice, and if it helps I don't have any mods installed. Like I said it was my second day playing.

Dumb question - have you tried cleaning the dirt and crud out of your case?

It is relatively new and I clean the dust filters regularly. And it doesn't make sense how I can play battles perfectly and the Napoleon's battles, but the campaigns fail. They just freeze and crash, no matter the graphical settings.

1. I notice your cpu is overclocked. NTW has shown not liking overclocking. This also includes ram and graphics cards.
2. You need to update your graphics card to version 10.4. Go to www.amd.com, plug in the info, download, and install.
3. Do a virus, spyware, malware scan. They will rob resources.

None, although since I installed Napoleon I have been having issues with my wireless card.

I am currently doing a stress test on my graphics card and (I built my PC in the winter, it is 26 degrees here today) it is clearly too hot. Nearly 90'c and that's just my graphics card. I have forgotton, how do I un-overclock my GPU and CPU. I have the OCGenie oc'ing my CPU.

Now you mention it, I had issues with Empire too after overclocking my PC.

Update:
Ok my internet is playing up now (slowing, not sure why) and I have tried to install the new ati driver 3 times and it hasn't updated, again I have no idea way, and the PC scan says it is up to date.

that is too hot for any component only notebook components are supposed to hit that temp, not desktop components, the operating grounds is 100c limit, so you're going to unclock those things and clean it.

and btw 26c is not hot, try 36 the other day we had here, or even 40c in the summer

How do I go about taking away my overclocks? I did it a long time ago now, and would rather not try to work it out for myself and break my system lol

dunno don't know what tool or if it was by the bios there are several ways to do it, I'm of it since my 2004 atlhon xp had moved to another realm, I use mostly laptops now

Cpu and ram overclocks are in the BIOS. Just set them back to default. The gpu is done inthe Catalyst Contol Center or some third party you are running. Set it to default, too.

Updated, also going to test the game now. Will update again based on performance.

This seems to be fixing the issue. It would appear the game force-shut itself down when the components became too stressed, or at least this is what I am assuming. Even higher settings now appear to be at least playable, thank you SO much for the help - now I can enjoy this wonderful game

Oh and, what is this game like if I was to use crossfire. I have heard it is not optimised for it, or something of the sort, but I was planning to buy a second graphics card.

Crossfire is not optimized good. Not only a second card, you will need a profile for each, and the patience to tweak it. Also, make sure you have enough power in your power supply for a second card and watch the temps.

Sounds like it is not worth the bother, I could just upgrade my GPU in the future for the same cost anyway.

Indeed. I'm fairly confident now it was an overheating issue, seem's to be fine now I have put the fans on a higher speed and undone my overclocking. Not much of a notable change in performance either. Overclocking over-hyped?

For TW games, overclocking is overhyped as you put it. For other games and programs, I don't know.
