    Default Gens (like in EB)

Is there any way to recreate the roman gens like in Europa Barbarorum? It was something i always liked about that mod. But if im not wrong, its something with traits, but I dont know exactly what to change, does anyone have any idea? IMO it would make playing with the Romans even awesomer and add more roleplay ^^

Ps: This is in no way critique on this mod, to be clear.

I believe EB uses RTW's 'Epithet' trait system to name Roman characters. It's slick, but also a nightmare to put in place. RS2 uses a system of cognomens, like so:

    Aelius_Lentulus
    Aebutius_Drusus
    Acilius_Catilina
    Albius_Verres
    Amatius_Vatia
    Ambrosius_Varus
    Annaeus_Varro
    Annaeus_Cornutus
    Annaeus_Floras
    Annaeus_Mella
    Annaeus_Seneca
    Annaeus_Statius
    Anneius_Turdus
    Annius_Tullus
    Annius_Asellus
    Annius_Bellienus
    Antonius_Tuditanus
    Apollonius_Tubulus
    Arrius_Tubertus
    Artorius_Tubero
    Asinius_Trio
    Asinius_Celer
    Asinius_Dento
    Asinius_Gallus
    Asinius_Pollio
    Asinius_Saloninus
    Atilius_Trigeminus
    Atilius_Longus
    Atilius_Serranus

And by extension you wouldn't be able to make 'Gens Cornelia' traits match up with people who have the name 'Cornelius', I suppose?

There is no need for that. As you can see in these names:

    {Cornelius_Bassus} Cornelius Arvina
    {Cornelius_Blasio} Cornelius Blasio
    {Cornelius_Cethegus} Cornelius Cethegus
    {Cornelius_Cinna} Cornelius Cinna
    {Cornelius_Cossus} Cornelius Cossus
    {Cornelius_Dolabella} Cornelius Dolabella
    {Cornelius_Lentulus} Cornelius Lentulus
    {Cornelius_Maluginensis} Cornelius Maluginensis
    {Cornelius_Mammula} Cornelius Mammula
    {Cornelius_Merenda} Cornelius Merenda
    {Cornelius_Merula} Cornelius Merula
    {Cornelius_Rufinus} Cornelius Rufinus
    {Cornelius_Scapula} Cornelius Scapula
    {Cornelius_Sisenna} Cornelius Sisenna
    {Cornelius_Sulla} Cornelius Sulla Felix
    {Cornelius_Gallus} Cornelius Gallus

The Gens is contained in the first name. The male form of the Gens is Cornelius, and the female form Cornelia. The way EB did it was to have a trait that identified that a character HAD a family name, a trait that identified what family adopted that character or whom he married, and then a trait that gave an Epithet name that would become the characters name. This involves hundreds and hundreds of lines of code.

The system RS2 uses is a lot simpler. The game just dishes out the gens and names as it pleases. Now, granted, it is less accurate, because there were Gens that were only Patrician, only Plebeian, or both, or Equestrian, or both, or combinations. It all depended on the time period. And of course, during the Imperium, much of this changed as new cultures became Roman citizens and their names got injected into the picture.

The advantage to the way I did it in RS2 is that there are 325 different Gens-Cognomen combinations, which combined with the 13 Prenomens used by the Romans gives you 4,225 different name combinations.

Is the epithet system not used in RS at all then?

Would the epithet system not be better used, not as EB do, giving them gens names, but to provide cognomens? Cognomens were often related to a Roman's character anyway, so based on what traits and stuff they have you could have matching cognomens. Or does that bring us back to the problem of hundreds and hundreds of lines of code?

Epithets are used for a few things like characters that gain triumphs and so on, as well as for the Roman emperor / heir. I was considering doing the naming system using traits and epithets, but as you say, to get a really comprehensive coverage of Roman names would require hundreds and hundreds of lines of code, which would almost certainly slow the game down. Besides which, I don't have time, I'm afraid.

Sorry for stupid question, but what is Gens?

A Gens is kind of like a Roman word for family (and probably parented the word 'genes'), so for example 'Julii' for Julius Caesar, though I think that it can be lengthened to 'Julii Caesarii' or something similar to denote he's part of the Caesarian branch of the family.

In the context of this thread, the original poster was wondering if we could add a trait to generals which would match their middle and/or last names like 'Gens Julii' or 'Gens Brutii' which would give certain benefits or detriments to that character based on that families' history.
