Wow. The place looks like a newer version of an old dorm room of mine. I actually paid extra for that.
Edit: Reading the description, it sounds like the dorms weren't nearly as nice, although there wasn't a wall obscured by trees that I'm aware of. So hey, at least I could...uh....go try not to get murdered in a Dallas suburb?

Even though the article doesn't mention it, I feel that this is a prison for light crime first time offenders. So going to Norway and killing some random person isn't going to get you there. But if you, being young and stupid, happened to steal a few things, this place is supposed to prevent your further indoctrination into criminal world. In fact it sounds like a good idea.
It's all in a day's work for bicycle repairman.
The only potential problem I see, is if they start putting east-European band of criminals in there. This should be a prison for people with Norwegian passports. Currently these bands doesn't risk enough in Norway, so why should we make ourselves even more attractive by offering them a 3 star hotel for free?
We should rehabilate our own criminals before we start rehabilating the EU.
And this is quite old news, by the way.![]()

Nothing new really. There are many luxury prisons all over Europe. Here's one from Austria:

Norway is very much into rehabilitation and they have had some success with it.
Their way of dealing with men that hit their wives has especially been a success, so much that it has gotten swedish feminists foaming at the mouth in rage.
As CarbEast mentioned, I dont think this prison will be for hard criminals but the lighter ones and to make sure that when they get out, they will not fall back into crime which is sadly a big problem.
Seriously, who has the higher level of Crime Norway or the rest of the world. Since Norway has less criminals they can treat the ones they currently have differently. Besides I doubt they spend more money on this luxury prison than the state of California does on its prison system.

That is both roomier and more luxurious than any dormitory at my school.
Exactly carb.... some people will criticize this forgetting that rehabilitation actually works.
Ishoss some people think prisoners should have any luxury... that they should exist solely in a cement cell with a hard tact bed with no opportunity to rehabilitate themselves.
Theres a difference between locking serial killers up and people who can reform.
Of course, I agree with this. Many criminals can be rehabilitated. But, like every other Schengen-zone country who prospers, Norway get quite a few east-EU criminals coming through. I don't think it's right that we rehabilate those. They're not our "responsiblity" and neither will they become productive members of our society when they've served their time.
I am all for rehabilitating those that can be rehabilitated, though.

A prison like this would probably work in Norway, as they also have very high standards of education and living. In a place like the UK, people would steal without fear of getting caught because they'd end up in a place like that.
The fact that our prison system also revolves around rehabilitation and, according to the article, results in 50-60% reoffending rate, show's we're not quite at the level where we can be as liberal and easy-going in our criminal institutions than the likes of Norway.
How is this sub standard naked room luxury?

Its pretty decent compared to some hotels ive been too.
Read the article, they each get a flat-screen TV and a suite bathroom.

A suite bathroom... the article exaggerates on that one mate. They have a toilet and a sink... nothing special.
That bed is not a hotel bed... it looks quite uncomfortable. Obviously it is no vacation but perhaps someone should post recommit rates in Norway. How many offenders released from these prisons offend again?

, that's nicer than my freshman dorm room. I'm moving to Norway.
But why do I think it's going to have the opposite effect? Many previous offenders dont commit a crime because they dont want to go to the hell that is prison. If I was in Norway, and thats what I knew I was coming back to, I'd be less hesitant to commit a crime again.
actually, you bring up a good point.Originally Posted by CarbEast
