Default North Korea sank the Cheonan, new report finds.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
'North Korean torpedo' sank South's navy ship - report

A North Korean submarine's torpedo sank a South Korean navy ship on 26 March causing the deaths of 46 sailors, an international report has found.

Investigators said they had discovered part of the torpedo on the sea floor and it carried lettering that matched a North Korean design.

Pyongyang rejected the claim as a "fabrication" and threatened war if sanctions were imposed, say reports.

China has urged both countries to show restraint.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak pledged to take "stern action" against the North.

The White House described the sinking of the ship as an "act of aggression" by North Korea that challenged peace.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the report was "deeply troubling".

Pyongyang said it would send its own inspection team to the South to "verify material evidence" behind the accusation.

A North Korean defence spokesman said the country would "respond to reckless countermeasure with an all-out war of justice", the state KCNA news agency reported.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said Beijing had "noted" the report and would make its own assessment, but called on both sides to exercise restraint.

The Cheonan went down near the disputed inter-Korean maritime border, raising tension between the two nations, which technically remain at war.

The shattered wreck of the 1,200-tonne gunboat was later winched to the surface, in two pieces, for examination.

    'Perfect match'
The investigation was led by experts from the US, Australia, Britain and Sweden.

It said: "The evidence points overwhelmingly to the conclusion that the torpedo was fired by a North Korean submarine.

"There is no other plausible explanation."

The report said the torpedo parts found "perfectly match" a torpedo type that the North manufactures.

Lettering found on one section matched that on a North Korean torpedo found by the South seven years ago.

There had earlier been a number of explanations suggested for the sinking, including an accidental collision with an unexploded sea mine left over from the Korean War.

Mr Lee's presidential office said he had told Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd: "We will be taking firm, responsive measures against the North, and through international co-operation, we have to make the North admit its wrongdoing and come back as a responsible member of the international community."

However, the BBC's John Sudworth in Seoul says agreeing an international response will be difficult as the diplomatic options will be limited.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said on Thursday the sinking of the vessel was "unfortunate" but he would not comment on the international report.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said US President Barack Obama had expressed his "deep sympathy" to Mr Lee and the Korean people and that the US "strongly condemned" the action.

"This act of aggression is one more instance of North Korea's unacceptable behavior and defiance of international law," said Mr Gibbs, adding that it "only deepens North Korea's isolation".

Mr Gibbs said the alleged attack was "a challenge to international peace and security and is a violation of the armistice agreement" which ended the Korean war.

But he said it had reinforced the resolve of North Korea's neighbours "to intensify their co-operation to safeguard peace and stability in the region against all provocations".

Japan's Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said in a statement that North Korea's action was "unforgivable".

The British embassy in Seoul quoted Foreign Secretary William Hague as saying: "[North Korea's] actions will deepen the international community's mistrust. The attack demonstrates a total indifference to human life and a blatant disregard of international obligations."

An angry letter, telling the North how angry we are.

EDIT: The North has threatened "full scale war" in the event of further sanctions.

NORTH Korea has warned of "full-scale war" if new sanctions are imposed as it again denied it sank a South Korean warship in March.

Probably mere sanctions. I don't think anyone expects NK to back up their words when it comes to war. They don't have the resources to sustain one. A war with North Korea would spell the beginning of its end and I don't think Kim Jong Il is willing to risk that just yet, if keeping his head down instead would ensure another few hard-won decades of North Korean poverty.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

Practically there can't really be an international response. Economic sanctions will be useless - this is a country quite happy to see its population die in a mass famine whilst Dear Leader travels around in his brothel fortress train. Military action will be hugely costly - South Korea will likely be devestated, allied losses will be significant, if not gigantic, not to mention that North Korea has access to atomic bombs. China will also block any military access, or conceivably could even intervene. The economy of the western world would react horribly the disruption in the South.

Yeah, that's about right. The only part I would disagree with is the China intervening. China has become increasingly distanced from NK and while I doubt they'd let us use their country as a spring board to open a second front, I don't think they would intervene at all.

Sadly military intervention in NK just isn't worth the price it would cost everyone involved.

I would hope to agree. However, it was a well known fact that China wouldn't intervene in the first Korean War, and they did, and they nearly kicked us out of the peninsula, too. So, is it worth the risk?

No, I don't think it's even worth the risk if they told us for sure they wouldn't intervene. Just too much damage will be done to everyone involved. It would be a costly, costly war, better to just wait till NK eventually/hopefully collapses.

Bomb them to pieces or just send Captain Price...
Seriously will North Korea stop doing this?! Whats their aim anoy South Korea and International Community forever since they can not go to a total war? Or even tring to make US or better South Korea directly declares war on them? They want to try nukes is it? The thing I find ironical is after North Korea does such things then always say they are the victims.

    ...
China may be distanced from the NK regime, doesn't mean they wouldn't interpret an attack against NK as a critical strategic threat to their own security. Imo they like it as a buffer state between them and a US ally if nothing else. The US strolling into said buffer zone and replacing it with a pro US state wouldn't be something they'd appreciate. I think they consider the current status quo preferrable to that.

Not true. The South sends MILLIONS if not BILLIONS in monetary aid to the North to keep the government funded. Forget the food, the aid to populace etc, cutting that money would have a HUGE effect on the North Korean government.

It's unfortunate, but they can hurt "us" (i.e. the rest of the world) more than we can hurt them (i.e. the guys running NK). The world economy will really suffer if Seoul is shelled from North Korea, and the people running North Korea don't really care what happens to their own country.

Does the US have the ability to knock out all the guns trained on Seoul within say, 30 mins?

Choosing between nuking the not so densly populated border region or letting Seoul be destroyed... Hmmm...

Do South-Korean (and the stationed American) tanks, SPA and IFV's have proper NBC filters?
