Default What is Sky Broadband like?

Has anyone here got Sky Broadband? My current connection with BT keeps dropping every few seconds (over the weekend, it was down completely) and I already have Sky TV, so it would make sense to ditch BT and go with Sky, if they have a good service, since it's always much cheaper to bundle everything with one supplier.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

It is the worst provider I have ever been with. I switched to Sky from BT and have regreted every minute.

They constantly and persistantly slow my speed to 1 tenth of what its meant to be in the hope I wont notice.

I'm not joking about this, I am serious and have confronted them several times on the matter. Then funny, it improves for a day and goes back down.

    They are a joke.

    DO NOT GET SKY BROADBAND.

I'm the other way, I have nothing but praise for Sky Broadband for me it's been stable as rock for 3 years now and I've never had an issue with it. The only drawback is if you do have to call them then your calling 'Nick' in Bombay but given how much it costs and the fact I don't have to call them (other then activation) and the reliability.

Now two weeks ago I moved out of my parents house and into my luxury abode and I will be using BT for Broadband for the time being however I've had nothing but aggro since I ordered it last month. Firstly I ordered it 4 weeks ago and I still don't have broadband, I called them last week (again Nick in Bombay) as the day the broadband was meant to go live it didn't and I was told there was a technical issue there end and it would go live on the 17th of May. So Tuesday comes, I get in from work, reset the router and look no broadband! I call Nick in Bombay again and we go through this pointless process of checking the router which I know won't fix it as I wanted the line tested. 10 minutes latter he finally gets around to checking the line, and tells me there's a fault and puts me through to faults (Sue in Surrey), 10 seconds in to speaking to Sue the line cuts out. I call back get through to Nick again, go through the same 25 minute process of checking the damn router get through the faults, checked the line and low and behold there is a fault and a BT is coming out tomorrow to fix it so maybe by tomorrow I will be able to get on here from my flat without having to use a fiddle phone.

That's what always happened to me when the line slowed down. Guess what? Most of the time, the engineer visit did nothing, and the line 'fixed itself' in a few days - which means that BT can do it from their end - so they don't need to waste their time and money by sending an engineer out and my time, waiting for him to arrive!

I don't know what Sky will be like long term, but I won't be going back to BT if Sky don't turn out to be good. Chances are, if it's good now, it'll stay like that.

My in-laws have it. I think it's awful. I'm with Tiscali / Talk Talk (whatever you call them) and they're far better.

Get on topic. It's not usual that I have to nuke an entire thread just to get it back on track.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't read them until now, because my BT connection was cut off completely, along with my phoneline - it's a long story.

As I said, the connection was bad, so I phoned BT. Next thing I know, my net and phone line are cut off. Upon calling BT, I'm told that I requested it to be cut off - which I didn't; I requested it to be fixed! Anyway, when the phone line was reactivated, it was with a new number. We had to wait around five days before it was changed back to the old one.

I was told that in order to get broadband back, I'd have to place a new order, which I did and was told that it would be active in five working days. Five working days later, on the day it was supposed to be activated, it was still down, so I contact BT again and they say there is no order on my account - so they must have forgot to put it through properly or something! As well as that, their system was saying that we'd never had BT Broadband at all , so they were unable to put us back on our discounted rate of £19.99 a month for Option 3!!! If we wanted it at that price, we'd have to wait ages while it is taken upstairs to a complaints department. At this point, I was really beginning to lose my patience. I contacted Sky, who said that they could activate a line for us within ten to fifteen days.

I am now with Sky - which was activated a couple of days ago. It's costing us £12.50 a month for Sky Broadband Unlimited, which will drop to less than £10 if we go with Sky Talk when the BT contract is up.
So far, I am delighted with the service - it is certainly faster than BT, as my speedtest shows:

Your current download speed is: 5.27 Mbps

which means you can download at 674.5 KB/sec from our servers.

(BT never went above 400kb/sec and averaged at around 250kb/sec. As well as that, it had a habit of slowing down every few months to 30kbps! )

Sky said that they'll start me off with 4mbps and test the line over the next ten days to determine my optimum speed, so it could be even faster, but either way, it's more than fast enough for me now.

For anyone thinking of BT, don't be fooled by the '20mbps' adverts. Judgement of Sky's long term reliability will come when I've had it for a while, but it's a good start. Also, when phoning Sky, I either hear an English or Scottish voice - not some Indian that - in all respect - can be very hard to understand over the phone!
