    Default What were the much-recited bad effects of Russian rule?

    Well, we all know they were bad effects... but what exactly were they? I'm asking this relative to the living standards and so on of the powers that Russia conquered the territories from. Pick the areas you want to answer. This is not restricted to any point in history but I'd rather not hear about USSR because we all already know it was bad.

    Example: Russian conquest of Crimea was bad because X deteriorated while before Russia came it was Y and the Russians prevented Z from developing, blablabla.

    Bad effects in the Baltic

    Bad effects in eastern Europe

    Bad effects in the Caucasus

    Forgot that. Too much reading about Russian manipulations in that region to remember that they never actually ruled there.
