Default Forcing low color depth (Win XP)

Hello, just a simple question, can anyone tell me how to force the display to use a color setting lower than the default 16 and 32 bit? It's for troubleshooting purposes.
    OS: WinXP Pro

    Thanks

Safemode is in 8 bit, isn't it?

    Anyway what are you troubleshooting?

Not for me, it sets the res at 640x480 but the color depth stays the same.
I want to try it because it might help me figure out a graphics problem.
