Default PC will not turn on

It is with great sadness and despair that i am forced to declare my computer kaput. Lacking the skills to revive it, i'm hoping the little angels here at TWC can give me some tips, before i deliver it to a more professional god.

One night it shut down, probably because i had kept it on for too long. This has happened once before, but that time i just waited for it to cool down before starting it again. This time however, it will not wake up. I suspect i could smell that it overheated, but i'm not 100% sure. I am inept at computers, but my guess is that either the motherboard melted/fried or that there is something wrong with the "powersupplything"
The green light on the PC is on, but when i press the on/off-button it will not start. A blue light starts for a second at the bottom part of the computer and i can see that the fan attempts to start and begins to move, but ultimately fails to work. This only happens when i have turned the computer off completely and then turned it back on again, if i try after the first time it doesn't respond at all.

And a completely unrelated question: If i hypothetically downloaded illegaly on my computer and then send it for repair, would the workers there report me/confiscate my pc? (i am not admitting to downloading illegily here, just if i did)

    save me TWC! (pretty please)

Take the power cable out, hold in the power button for about 5 seconds, plug it in and switch it on.

    Not joking, try it.

'One night it shutdown' which means it powered off by itself, which means it bypassed the ATX power switching.

If that get's set wrong then the symptoms are as you describe. So try it.

Whatever caused it to power off in the first place was probably a hardware issue. Could be PSU or Mobo, as you say.

As for the hypothetical 'will computer people notice my ******' the answer is 'yes', you should assume they will. So ask them what they do when they find stuff like that before you give them the impression that you might want them to repair it for you.

Ah well, then I think you need a new mobo or psu, most likely mobo.

Go buy a PSU and swap it with the old one, then take it back if it doesn't fix the problem.

Then get the same mobo you had before if you don't want to reinstall windows.

The mobo will come with a manual that covers installation. If you can read, you'll be fine.

If you pretend you are too dumb to fit new hardware, or that people who can are exceptionally clever, then it will probably cost you a lot of money in the long run.
