I know what you mean. I suggest you should get trade rights with as many factions you can, and avoid getting your military too big. And with the forces you have, take rebel settlements. Serdobinskaya is more important for strategic reasons (south of your lands, a castle between Kievans and Kumans, it will come handy in the future), and that city in Finland (is it Tartu) has a port, so it should bring some florins, and you can make it a city (it's also a castle) in the future.
And use your merchants, because Novgorod has a merchant guild for the beginning (at least it has in the 1450 campaign). Your merchant's first goals should be: 1. island of Visby (in the Baltic sea, near the coast of Sweden, it has silver mines); 2. south-east of Murom (also silver mines).
I hope these few advices will help, if I remember of something else, I'll post it here.

Just sharing my knowledge of English, it should have been "I hope these few pieces of advice will help-"
    You did help.

All I can think of is that your army may be too large.
If you aren't making much money and know which buildings make money, then your army size is making you poor.
Only have as many troops as you need.

The trouble with Novgorod is that your cities are far flung and so suffer more from corruption, not to mention that there are few decent money making cities in the east. Your best bet is to expand into the Baltic where you can accumulate all the sea trade. Also, make a bee-line for Kiev (you'll need it eventually anyways) to give you some trade in the Black Sea.

You should also look at the armies you have dotted around. Typically, your cavalry will be your best units, and also the most expensive, but anywhere where you have cavalry that are only performing garrison duties or somesuch just disband them. I usually find I have 6 or 7 units of cavalry that are doing nothing but eating up money. By getting rid of them you could get an 2000+ in income each turn. Also, go round checking your governors and make sure they're actually earning you money rather than losing it through bad traits.

    Hope this helps

Novgorod should either go west or south at the start. Gaining access to the Baltic is easier and more profitable so is probably the best options. The Black Sea can be profitable but takes much longer to reach and develop plus puts Novgorod in contact with many more factions which require more armies to defend against.

Landlocked cities will never gain the income of port cities but can still bring in substantial income if you develop agriculture and roads first. Agriculture also increases population growth rate which helps tax revenues. Usually it is easiest to build up the port cities first as you get the most return for them and so your early expansion and governors should be concentrated there.

If you stay in the interior and never gain access to many port cities you absolutely have to be minimalist in defense. That is difficult to accomplish on the widely spaced regions you must defend so best is to have peace with your eastern neighbors and focus on the European powers to the west.

Merchants are also key... silver mines are close by and a bit further are gold, silks, and spices which bring in nice income. A mid level merchant in Sicily on a trade resource will bring in nearly 1,000 gold per turn. As soon as you get 4-5 merchants on decent trade resources your income should increase by 3,000-6,000.

I just finished playing some 70 turns as Novgorod, Baltic is the way to go. Sneaky Lithuanians took Riga before I could, but they buffer me and Poland at least. Expanded east to Ryazan and Murom and the rest to the west. Norway is at perfect relations with me because I kinda happened to take Sweden area and "politely" asked Denmark for Lund so I could take England(Kiev and Lithuana were good allies and pope loves Norway, nowhere to go!) They called a bluff and in a few got a faction destroyed.

I have about 28k banked and make 8000/turn. Just started a war with Cumans(backstab) and took Bulgar, will probably take Kazan and the rest and give everything other than Bulgar and Kazan to the pope so i can take out England without a hassle.

So yeah...Baltic, good stuff. Hanseatic league in Reval helps and so do merchant guilds.

My first SS campaign was with novgorod, so it was a bit nooby. But i had the same problem as you, no money, constant war and getting a bit stagnant.

I was in a bitter war of attrition with BOTH norway and denmark, which drained alot of money for a long time. looking back, i should've retreated regrouped and built my economy, but anyway like everyone said, disband some units and stuff.

BUt the way i managed to get out of debt, was to stop putting military above economy. During a lull in the quite frankly EPIC war, i took ten turns out, recruited very few units and built my economy and majorly sacrificed my army, and soon i had coffers to spare on my army, to the point where i could build superior armies and take the baltic which stablised my economy.
