    Default Crash to Desktop

    Hey All,

I got tired of Empire Total War because it would seem like my battles would always crash on me. I downloaded the NTW demo and everything seem to run great and it seemed much more optimized in large battles.

Anyway, I was playing my first or second battle in the Italian campaign and the game crashed on me again. I'm not so sure it was my computer as it was an order I was giving. I had grouped everyone together and used the "Up Arrow" command to get them marching. I then decided to get one unit of line infantry running and I noticed that it wasn't actually running (animation wise) but the unit info said it was running. I just kept hitting "R" for run and then I did that for the entire group. Then the game crashed. I was able to get it to happen one more time so I thought maybe it was actually a bug in the game, as opposed to my computer and wanted to see if anyone else can replicate it or have had this problem.

I don't remember the exact specs of my computer off hand but it's something like:
    Windows Vista
    Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz
    2 GB DDR2 Memory (2x 1GB sticks)
    GeForce 8800 GTS PCI-E x16 640 MB

Everything runs smooth at Ultra settings with Shader Model 2.

I would say your computer is struggling, the recomended system reqs for vista are 3gb and your processor is not that great... Try turning fown some of the options.

post dxdiag, and make sure that your components are dust free, buy some canned air and clean everything (to clean the fans gently hold the fan into position and blow the dust

2GB is the recommended amount of RAM for Windows Vista.

Like I said, the game runs smoothly on ultra settings on Shader Model 2. There are no hiccups whatsoever. My battles sometimes just cause a crash to desktop for some reason. With all the bugs Empire had, I just assumed it was the game because there were others who had crashes. The funny thing is I never had crashes on sea battles, just land battles.

http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/68174 and read what the minimum and recommended specs are. I stand by what I posted.

Have you tried the Nvidia 197.45 drivers?

Have you tried disabling your Audigy card and running off the onboard sound chip?

What do you have against Vista SP2?

After that, in battles, my thinking is you are running out of memory on those high settings. Turn down your battle settings and see if it still happens.

Recommended for vista is 3gb memory, minimum is 2gb...

irishron, I will try those drivers and I will probably purchase 2 more GBs of RAM, as the motherboard can support 4 GBs. I'm into the game enough to upgrade some things but not enough to go and get all new computer parts. I've been meaning to get more RAM anyway. I'll see if that also works.

    Thanks for everyone's help.

Ha! I tried those updated drivers but that made the game almost unplayable. It increased the time it took to do everything and the battles crash almost immediately. And this was after I just received 2 more GBs of RAM (so now I have a total of 4 GBs). I went ahead and downloaded some of the oldest drivers nVidia has on their site, 182.50. Everything was working great. I was able to get passed the battle that kept crashing, and now another battle (about 4 battles later) crashed on me. There was no hint of it going to crash, no stuttering, and bam! I pretty much give up with Empire and Napoleon... I guess I'm going to have to stick with MTW2... Anyone else have any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Might as well clean the pc, how are your temps? use rivatuner and speedfan and post here.

How did you install those drivers?

And have you bought the same memory that you had or any that was priced great?

I've installed both the rivatuner and speedfan. Is there a print-out or something like the dxdiag that both of them do? I've attached a screenshot of what the speedfan displays once I start the battle, which is between 40 units in the rain (battle for Spain). I was going to post more screenshots but for some reason I was able to play the entire battle this time.. weird. Also, when I paused the battle to take another screenshot, I minimzed the screen, maximized NTW and saw that my redcoats had turned to whitecoats.

This crash is intermittent but very annoying when you fight for 20 minutes and then the game crashes. I just autoresolve the next time.

I installed the drivers but uninstalling the video card then reinstalling it through Device Manager. The memory I bought was the exact same memory I originally purchased for the system. So there are 4x 1GB sticks of Corsair XMS2 DDR2 in my system.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi
I bought top of range quad core motherboard, i7 920 cpu, 3gb DDR3 and top flight graphics card and Empire and Napoleon still freeze on me. So I don't think an upgrade will help you. If you find or hear of any software patches that might help I would appreciate a nod.

    Cheers

The gpu temp is hot but not bad.

I'd like to know what temp3 is. It's too hot for 99% of hardware.

Try turning down sound options. Especcially turn of sound caching. Sound was what the problem was for me. Never hurts to try.

I think the temp 3 is for the memory, you have to clean your card.

Memory, as in a hot spot?

A very hot spot, that temp is not operational level for anything in the pc.

The memory in a gpu usually is the hottest part of the pc, and in this case might trump my temps

are you sure temp3 is memory? because in my speedfan it says temp3 = -128C which probably means i dont have whatever temp3 is?
