If Russia joins NATO it's role as an alliance is officially obsolete, really. It would be better to simply disband it and transfer functionality to the UN.

Yeah, still very much alive. Nothing has really changed in this respect.

There was a great documentary on the so called 'spy game'. Covered the entire history, into today. Really crazy stuff. And we were played for fools, almost as a rule. The Soviets were a crafty bunch. And just as now, with other groups that mean us harm, they used our values against us.

It is actually fairly amazing that things didn't end up much differently.

Its the US that potentially opens and scans my hardrive if I cross the border though ;D, nice way to do some industrial espionage. The Russians and Chinese do it the "honest" way with actually bothering to hack, and not spout "terrorist prevention" nonsense.

It is nice to see a détente though, especially after relations were strained over NATO missiles in Poland fairly recently.
