    Default Downgrade to Vista?

I have a new Thinkpad T410. The problem is that my screen brightness I'm sometimes able to adjust other times, I'm not able to adjust. And given I'm a student it is crucial for me to have this ability in order to save power when I need. Also, the USB ports similarly sometimes work and sometimes don't. There also a few minor issues. However from what I've read, it seems that this is mainly caused by the fact that Windows 7 is quite new and still has some minor issues with some laptops. If a fix doesn't come soon, I would want to downgrade to Vista, because I know Vista has been out for several years and right now works well. I would like to know if it is possible to downgrade to Vista, or I have to buy Vista?

That seems more of a BIOS issue than anything.

also, theres 2 ways to change the brightness of said Screen. I assumed your trying to turn down/up the brightness via the buttons on the laptop, try going to power options and changing it there.

Yeah, I've tried to adjust brightness that way too. It's very inconsistent, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This goes also for wireless sometimes not opening up. I just believe it's as a result of the news OS, I'm pretty certain this wouldn't be the case with Vista now. Maybe in a year the laptop will be up to par with windows 7. I also have updated Bios very recently, but still the same.

It's not the OS... I have windows 7 on 6 computers in my house including 3 laptops and I have never run into any of these problem.

a BIOS update may fix the problem, what laptop is it?

It also sometimes randomly reverts my skin to Windows Basic...it's a Lenovo T410, but it's new build, came out about month ago.

Well it sounds like a hardware issue. What I suggest doing is reformatting and if that does not fix the problem then I suggest taking the laptop back for a refund, maybe check if other people are having the same problem.

My laptop has touchpad problems where when I let sleep my touchpad won't work but it's a bios issue

    7 is just Vista sp2 isn't it?

BTW the issue sounds like your drivers don't support 'sleeping'... Maybe updating them will solve it.

No windows 7 is different OS, design is similar but not the software. I wait for any updates to come up, but if they don't soon, I don't know..

Windows 7 is actually the same software as vista, just with some tweaks. It literally is Vista with a very large service pack built in.

So does that mean any hardware that works with vista will work with windows 7?

If anything Windows 7 would have better compatibility with hardware than vista. MS fixed a lot of compatibility problems with 7.

Yeah, everyone knows windows 7 is the bug fixed vista, they sold the beta(vista) and then the real product (windows 7). Sorta like etw, and ntw, but much more so.

Seriously thou, if your going to downgrade to strait to xp, skip vista, its the worst os since windows ME.

Also if its like every other laptop I've ever seen Lenovo diagnostic, and any other programs or software that come with it are a horrible joke, and a waste of space, along with any other included software, none of it should be expected to work, you don't want it on your pc atall.

I'd say reinstall windows 7, if you can from a disc that doesn't have all the useless crap your laptop comes bundled with on it, see if it works then.

Or if you've already got some spare OS's lying around then you mayaswell trying swicthing about, but i wouldn't buy an os for it.

All Windows operating systems in the NT line use the same codebase. So Windows 7 is based on Vista, which is based on XP, which is based on Windows 2000, which is based on Windows NT 4.0, etc. The internal name for Windows 7 is Windows NT 6.1 – you can see this in a bunch of places if you look.

So Windows 7 is a modified version of Windows Vista, just like Vista is a modified version of XP. But Vista makes a lot more infrastructural changes and is less compatible with earlier versions. Windows 7 focused more on performance and UI improvements. Windows 7 only had about three years of work going into it, too, instead of five for Vista (measuring from the release date of the previous desktop version). It's fair to say XP to Vista is a bigger jump than Vista to 7, but Windows 7 isn't the same software as Vista – it has significant changes.

I probably rather stick to 7. I haven't had those problems these last couple days and also it will be a hassle to reinstall all the programs, transfer files, etc. I will only downgrade to Vista if I know for sure it will work better with my laptops hardware and won't falter. If not rather not spend the money or time..

Good idea, and keep an eye on the laptop manfacturers website for drivers that work properly.
