Templars, hard start, but quite a fun campaing...
Sicily is nice since it has almost all units tha other factions have, meaning italian militias, good archers, cavalary, infantry...
HRE is nice too, once u get fortress and citadels, cuze of their cool-looking and pwning gothic knights
Oh, I just realized that SS may not offer any new factions to play..and that the Kingdoms Expansion CD gives the new factions...sorry..Thanks, HolyDevil for your comment, and the Templars sound cool....
Ireland's fun and in a pretty rough starting positon (Especially Early Era, since they can't expand off the island until they either buy some merc boats or wait for their pitiful cities to get up to ports).
HRE is the Holy Roman Empire. It's awesome. Duty, honor, and ze Reich.
These are arguably the most popular factions the mod has to offer:
The teutonic knights.
Byzantium
HRE
<<Other Crusader Faction (Templars, Crusader states, KoJ, etc)>>
Mongols (but only in bftb 2.0 or the RR/RC comp.)
In no particular order
PS: Also, the turks are rather popular in terms of the muslims, but imho those peoples dont get a great representation in SS, they still look and feel quite vanilla![]()
My most memorable campaigns...
Genoa, Danemark, Portugal, Turks.
Also fun but not as memorable... Lithuania, Crusader States, Venice, HRE, Hungary.
Byzantines
HRE
Novgorod
Don't run, you'll only die tired.

TO. They look badass.
The Teutonic Order has the best looking troops, but I like the Byzantines, the HRE, and Denmark/Norway.
The Teutonic Order is awesome in so many ways. They're definitely one of my favorites.
Byzantines are also really great. I mostly like them because their armies are so diverse and you can generally plan against anything.
Holy Roman Empire is great as well. They have really great units all around, and they start in a clusterof a situation.
a) At least I Do.Can`t imagine I`m the only one.
b) We will see, my friend...BTW challange is why I play this game. Nothing is more boring than knowing you will win anyhow. I like being on the side of the mavericks with - allegedly - no chance. Think that`s the extentialist in me... :sparta:
HRE, Teutons, KOJ, France, Venice, Aragon. RR.
Kill Them All, Let God Sort Them Out!
Teutonic Order for badassery.
Egypt for a challenging turtle.
Byzantines for almost every reason.
Scotland and England for island fortress.
Templars/Crusader states for challenge.
And you can really mix things up.
Like in one campagin, playing as the Crusader states, I sold all my land to Egypt, and migrated to Tunis.
Tunis was held by Sicily, so of course retribution fell on my head.
They even called a crusade on the crusader states.
In another campagain, I played as the Holy Roman Empire, and migrated to Ireland.
That campagin is still in progress at the moment.
