Default Naval: What's the deal with prize money?

After winning at sea, the ships you didn't send to Davy Jones locker can either be added to your fleet or exchanged for prize money. What does the latter mean? Do the ships just disappear into some dark part of ETW, or is the prize ransom money from the losing nation which gets the ships back?

Perhaps refering to selling of ships and cargo? I mean destroying and sinking a ship you do not want is a waste since ships took a long time to build then, just as they do now. I know the USN used a few captured German ships for a while after WWII to shore up the USN, most later were used in Nuclear testing though. Also meny captured arms and weapons were never destroyed, but often sold to other countries for a profit. Israel was pretty much founded on German K98 Mausers for pete sakes purchased from verious nations including the UK/US, numbers wise they had more Mausers than even the Lee Enfields sold, why sell still in use Lee Enfields when you had lots of German arms captured after the war? hehe You can say ships ar ethe same way, I find it sad though you can sell naval ships to individual nations. I'd love to do that, I'd love to buy ships from more powerful factions as well. Pay more for it than they would, but atleast you can still get one. I know France Build the the United States a few Warships during the American Revolution, and I think Great Britian or was it France again? Which built atleast one Ship for the Confederate States of American during the American Civil War.

I know at one point in the early US, the government actually considered renting portugal's navy, however that deal fell through.

    Well you can just say

    Options for Captured Ships

    1: Keep
    2: Sell
    3: Refer back to 1 & 2

I know Sid Meier's Pirates it was quite common for every player to keep most ships they captured and later sell them at ports for extra cash definity when they were not insanely damaged when captured, a ship is a ship, it's value may very by condition, but they are still valued assets.

Thx for the replies, but back to the original question: Do sold ships disappear into nothingness or are they ransomed (=bought back by the enemy).

Well maybe they are stripped and the materials used for other ships, cause they are damaged
