Lagging badly in battles?

I can play Medieval 2 battles with high settings no problems unless I'm in the thick of the action, but I've everything on low in Empire and it still lags horribly. And it looks horrible to boot, almost like I'm back playing Rome

I'm fully patched (playing on steam) and my drivers are up to date.

My specs are

Intel i3 2.93Ghz dual core processor
NVIDIA G210 Direct X 10, 512mb graphics card
3GB DDR3 SDRAM

What gives?
