Default Tonga overtook Italy in freedom of press - new Freedom House rankings

Here we go ladies, the brandnew rankings released by Freedom House about freedom of the press. In the island of Tonga, Oceania, capital Nuku'alofa, George Topou V is ruling actually. All the industry so the economy of the state's in his personal hands. Corruption is extremely high. In the rankings about freedom of the press, Tonga overtook Italy. If Tongans are semi-free and producing bananas, what the Italians are and what do they produce?
Substantially Italy remained stable between position 72nd and 75th, but CONFIRMED TO BE THE ONLY ONE WESTERN COUNTRY "PARTIALLY FREE". Congrats to Tonga that after a long pursuit's been able to overtake the imperium of Berlusconi. Now i will attend the overtaking of Namibia and Timor East.

    Here the rankings (.PDF)

It's time to celebrate with Chianti wine

    Cheers

Interesting list. The Scandanavian countries seem to top these types of lists quite regularly: freedom of press, living standards etc. Well done to them.

Italy also clearly has some issues here. They're letting the European/Western-side-as-a-whole side down!

Berlusconi yesterday released some interesting thought:

"Freedom of the press? If there's a certainty in Italy's that we have too much freedom of the press here. I believe this is a proven fact and unquestionable."

Freedom House about Italy: heavy media concentration and official interference in state-owned outlets continues to hold Italy at Partly Free.

That's some hardcore ****, but I can't say that I'm that surprised, I really don't understand the Italians thought process... Get tax "exemptions" in return for less freedom.

A victory for Berlusconi I suppose. Congratulations, sir, you have less press freedom than Ghana! I'm a bit concerned to see N. Ireland on there. I didn't realise that journalists were still threatened for reporting on sensitive issues.

"For what it’s worth: it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again."

Cheer up, you only have Berlusconi for a problem. He won't live forever. Just hope sheep, I mean people, don't elect another Berlusconi after him.

We, on the other hand, have car bomb, regular death threats and beatings of journalists. Hence exactly 10 positions below Italy. Things that can't be solved by getting rid of one man.

davide, you're blowing it out of proportion. If you look further you will find Papau-New Guinea kicked your asses by a long shot, but you still beat Croatia, Bulgaria, and many other countries.

Honestly: this whole rating system is very superficial and naturally biased to more socialist countries. These are very synthetic indicators that have little to no bearing on the quality of life or even the freedom of expression. I find it hard to believe that a country as bland and uninteresting in its press as Finland or Sweden has more freedom of the press than the United States, whose media contains the most vibrant expression of political opinion.

Well, there's a difference between having freedom of press and having anything interesting to report of course.

Yay, someone made a list ranking freedom in different countries, so it must be true!
