    Default Victory in Europe Day

VE Day soon. The time when the bloodiest chapter in European history came to a close.

Well German troops in Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands surrendered to Montgomery on May 4th with the ensuring liberation of those countries being put into action the next day. Guess we can use this thread for celebrating that event as well.

Here's a big thank you to all the heroic soldiers of the Western Allied armies, the Brits, the Americans, the French, the Commonwealth troops, the Indians, the Polish, the Restiance Fighters etc. etc. Also much appreciation and honour to the peoples of the Soviet Union who beat back the Nazi invaders whilst under the strain of their own authoritarian yoke. However, chief of all, a profound thank you is in order for the British under Monty who made sure that 5 years of darkness and humiliation weren't replaced with another 45 years under the heels of new despotic occupation.

Yesterday I recieved my Grandfathers medals that he never applied for from the war, so thats quite good timing being only a couple of days away from VE -Day, although he was in Burma so had to wait a few more months for his war to end.

Burma Star, Defence Medal, British War medal.

He's also entitled to the 1939-45 Star but he was issued that in about 1943-44 But I can't find it anywhere. (I'll order a replacement).

Nice. My family is having trouble finding my Granddads War Medals as well (he was cremated a few years back). He got a Distinguished Service Cross and Bar (I am not sure what else).

You get them replaced in certain circumstances, my grandad never applied for those but once he's dead (about 15 years ago) family can apply for them. It goes from eldest child down to eldest grandchild.

You can always buy replacements, I'm going to get them mounted with a photo. He was 66th (Leeds Rifles) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment.

I'll get my dad to look into it. I remember my granddad showing me them when I was younger (And less interested) so they are definitely about. I am not sure about his regiment- I just know he commanded a motor torpedo boat.
