good game ? cant play it

Please can you advise me How I play this game when all it wants to do is upload updates. These take for ever when you finally get everything to 100% they bring out another 24hours later so you are back to square 1. I heard a rumour that this was good game and bought on disk from my local shop but I am still unable to play it 3 months on due to the interference of steam. Anybody got any ideas.m
