    Default Orthodox Excommunication

I love playing as the Romans and Russians, and it has always seemed odd to me that the Orthodox factions cannot excommunicate or call a crusade. Seeing as how the East and West had excommunicated EACH OTHER in 1054. And the Romans did participate in several of the crusades. I thinkall Christian factions should take part in crusades and be subject to excommuns.

Well, the eastern Christians wouldn't have recognized the authority of Rome so they probably didn't give a damn about their holy crusades unless they would directly affect them (such as the Fourth(?) Crusade when Venice conquered them and created the Latin Kingdom).

piggyback piggyback...question: would it be possible to implement crusades for the Orthodox factions? Of course their objectives would be somewhat different, like the reacquisition of Italy[southern} and the Bulgarian areas for instance...

Well let's say just for gameplay purposes then...

I agree with joining crusades only to improve your relation with christian nations. Then again, one of the crusades ended up being a pillaging of constantinople instead of taking the "holy land." The problem is the orthodox people could care less what the catholic pope says. Excommunication effects unrest and should not in an orthodox land. Therefor, excommunication is irrelevant unless used only to worsen your relations with christian nations.

This is the issue with historical accuracy. Who knows what would have happened if things were different. If the empire grew enough, it could have called it's own crusades on cities it felt were relevant if they needed the peoples support to invade. That's a reason I don't like the separation of building types for different factions. If Sicily took over north africa and parts of the middle east, wouldn't they take advantage of a caravan trading system?

I agree, just because they didn't doesn't mean they couldn't.

Well they would raised an army and conquer it but never in the name of God or in a fashion of a religious war like a crusade or jihad. The Orthodox believe that murdering in the name of God is sacrilege.

And Catholics believed in purgatory but don't anymore. Beliefs change with culture change. If the Russian or Roman factions grew enough, who knows what culture changes they would have gone through by adding new cultural groups. Also, the more power a ruler had, the more they could change the beliefs of a people. Look at England and Henry VII. Remember, the smallest change in history could create a completely new world. In this game we as players and even the AI are changing what would be historically accurate with every turn.

Crusades are only available to catholics and jihads are only available to muslims. This is hardcoded and cannot be changed.

Well, doesn't that just blow monkey chunks. I was already to shop the idea to the nearest gullible modder for a sub-mod about Orthodox Crusades....

The nearest would be an event to let a random general join a crusade, granting an increase in movement points, and access to units not normally available.

The forth "Crusade" was Venice's attempt at trolling.

In the crusade of nicopolis, Orthodox Serbians actually fought against the crusaders on the side of the Ottomans (granted, they were the Turks' vassals, but still...)

Come on, guys! Where is the tolerance? We are all people, our beliefs doesn't change that.
Going back to topic, it would fit in the game just to demostrate the importance of the Constantinople Patriarch over the Orthodox people.

Comedy is comedy. If you can't laugh at something you are oversensitive. But back on topic, since crusades and jihads are hardcoded, it's all a moot point. I would not suggest changing orthodox into catholics. Maybe an event to have the romans send everything they have if you sack Constantinople but Russian factions would historically care less.
