I think it will actually back up the game at the current state when you click 'back-up.' At least from my personal experience it always has worked. I have also deleted content before, such as a mod, and it still saves as though the mod files were there... this caused a bit of trouble when I would try to play for a while. But I am pretty sure it saves as is when you back it up.
You might need to copy files from a different directory. Steam just updated and then started crashing on startup. I uninstalled steam and then downloaded the install.exe from the steam website.
Turns out, the new version installs to program files/steam where the previous versions had all installed to program files/valve/steam. This meant that my new steam version broke all references, so shortcuts stopped working, and steam thought I had zero games installed and wanted me to download Empire for $29 when I tried to launch it.
The solution was to copy all data files from the old steam folder into the new one, and then edit the empire shortcut to launch the new steam.
Also, new steam client refused to install to anything but a completely empty/new directory, so I couldn't install into the old folders to preserve them.
Anyone else experience this debacle?
I can't say I did. I applied the update over my current install. It recognizes all my games and their current locations ok.
But when you tinkered with steam, does it still install games to the folder where steam is located? I have a second HDD for all my game installs (since reinstalling them after doing an OS restore is a) and currently all my games are under D (or w/e other than C) /steam/common/ etc

hm so better deinstal, redownload and then back it up, copy it to an external harddrive, drive into the forrest to the bunker and lock it up for disaster recovery security.
awesome. i ll start a new "i hate steam thread"![]()
is your hard drive big enough to partition? I find my OS and apps uses less than 64 GBs (which it actually HAS to since my SSD is only that big) and then you can install steam to the partition. Its like a backup without doing...a backup! and since some savegame files are created within a game's install folder your don't have to hunt and peck as much.
its so hard to resist going on a rant about how savegame files areing annoying to find...
*edit* YAY this is my 1000th post**
