What version of the mod did you ahve installed?
If it was Gold or RTR Platinum: then you indeed have to reinstall RTW, because those mods overwrote many of your gamefiles.
If you were using RTR Platinum "-mod switch", RTR VII: FoE, RTR VII: TIC or ExRM, then all you had to do was to delete the "modfolder" inside your RTW folder and you're done. Or you can just leave it there if the other mod you want to play is installed inside a modfolder too...

I downloaded RTW 6 Gold, and the download and installation went along fine. I started up the game, it played the intro video, and went to the main menu just fine. but when i click on Single Player, all the buttons are grayed out! wtf!
then i tried to uninstall it, so i deleted all traces of RTW off my computer, but when i try to reinstall RTW, it wont let me! whats going on????![]()
You shouldn't have just deleted all files, but instead used the uninstal. Now there seem to be no traces or RTW anymore, but it likely still is in your registry, meaning that your computer thinks it's still installed. I'm not sure how to fix that though...![]()
It's possible that after an uninstall some traces of the game could be left on your hard drive. At that point it's sensible to delete the folders.
If you've got Windows Vista or 7 and have installed into the 'c:\program files (x86)' folder then any changes you make in-game (preferences.txt) and saves and replays will be in the 'virtual store' or 'appdata' folders. These should also be deleted if they were not done automatically by the uninstall process.
To find the start of the 'appdata' folders in Vista run %appdata% and with 7 search for %appdata% and then follow the path.
It will probably be 'c:\Users\"useraccount"\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War'.

From now when you use a mod that isn't mod-foldered, copy your vanilla total war directory somewhere else in C: and install it there![]()
The same thing happend to me when I reinstalled RTW. I deleted all of the files (on Vista) in the folder Program Files (x86)/The Creative Assembly/ Rome-Total War
After a search (Uninstall Rome- Total War) i found out that the uninstall folder is in a seperate folder in Start Up Menu/Programs/Total War/Rome Total War
If you removed all traces of Rome Total War than this might not help
The whole mod switch thing kinda confuses me, so this is what I do...
Clean copy of RTW, updated fully. Copy the entire RTW folder, and create a duplicate in another folder. That is my hard copy that never changes.
Now, whenever I see a mod that takes my fancy, I copy the vanilla folder, and paste it into a new folder (example, RTR, etc) then install the mod to my new RTR folder that contains the vanilla copy.
Ive used this system countless times, and I have about 15 copies of RTW each with a diff mod. This takes up a lot of space, but most people have a bazillion GB hard drives, so it doesnt really bother me.
I also use this system for all M2TW mods and BI mods. Hope that helps![]()

I found that installing RTW on Windows 7 is best acomplished when you direct the installer to the folder you want to install it to.
Letting the installer use the default settings seemed to cause all sorts of issues such as part of the game installing in one place and different parts installing elsewhere. Seemingly random though.
The installer seems to have dificulty telling Program Files from Program Files (x86)![]()
