Aka. "Everyone is Kyon"
(I don't know Latin, so be free to rip at my incompetent attempt to imitate)
I just realized that the vast majority of male leads in visual novels and subsequently anime/manga spun off from these tend to take after the protagonist of Haruhi Suzumiya with little to no failure. Up to and including those penned by Western visual novelists, mind you (Katawa Shojo springs to mind). This includes a snarky, 'I-can-care-less' attitude to pretty much everything, up to and including his own life, the tendency to find everything around him odd (or alternately, everything around him is already odd thanks to the setting), and a Chivalrous Pervert, if any, approach to girls. All this to end up with him gradually revealing his heart of gold and pretty much shouting out that he could have been a Messianic archetype if he could care more by the time the story ends.
Possible exception would be Makoto Itou from School Days.
Discuss. Why are there such an abundance of Kyon clone these days?
