I usually choose hard for my campaign and hard or very hard for my battles. But exactly what benefits does the AI get if you choose hard or very hard for your campaign. Does the AI just get more money to build armies or does it affect the money you get or something like that?

In battle they get a high morale bonus. In campaign I'm not sure, but I think they get more money.

I know that on hard and very hard the AI gets a trait that boosts their generals stats by more than it would on easy and normal.

TATW is tougher than Medieval Total War II. I usually play METW II H/H, which I think is roughly equal to TATW's average settings for both the strategy game and battle game.

I do the same as Alex-ander, I have the campaign on hard, and the battles on very hard , because I am not very good at evening out economy and army in campaign map, but I am awesome at fighting battles with the odds stacked up against me

I use same tactics with difficulty, but I'm good with the economy too and good in battles, no problems.

You just need to know how to play with every faction, different tactics, as Isengard I'm really agressive, but I'm expert with defensive play style so, playing now as agressive "leader" , I'ts pretty new for me
As Isengrad I declared war on Rohan in turn 3 when it was turn 8 I took the Hornburg
