Default Thoughts on Byzantines & Civil Wars

Historically, the greatest danger to all of the great empires - the HRE, Fatimids, Seljuks, Byzantines...Were almost always internal strife. Especially following the death of a powerful ruler who was either heirless or whose heir was too young.

It would be nice if there could be triggers that detect when the heir to the kingdom ends up as someone besides their son or direct 'legal' successor. They would need some way to get a rebel army or take a couple provinces though. Any thoughts?

It's also worth mentioning that the Byzantine's starting position is way too strong. Out of all the factions, they expand the most aggressively, soon dominating all of Anatolia, the islands, and the Balkans. This was at a time when the Bulgar kingdom to the north was actually stronger than the Byzantines in Europe and often played kingmaker. Unfortunately, Constantinople isn't a valid crusade target either, and the AI never attacks them. The Seljuks almost never expand, too.

That whole region could definitely use tweaking.

/And I'd still like it if the Irish stopped conquering Iceland and then moving to North America by 1220.

EDIT: Also. The combination of Corfu and Arta as one province, with 90% of the territory in Arta, but the city and port in Corfu makes for a very unattractive map, and a pain in the ass for dealing with rebels from your 'regional' capital. The capital should be moved from Corfu to Arta.
