I started an early campaign as Spain (or, more accurately Leon-Castille I suppose). Portugal proposed an alliance soon in (which I accepted), and soon after the Moors attacked right after I took the last rebel city.

Great. I went in and started whacking Moors until I had retaken Spain (save for one city east of Cordoba in which I was defeated).

Then, suddenly, the Crown of Aragon attacks. Was NOT expecting this since I had trade relations with them and the relationship was considered "very good"...but okay...I'll take it. They took one castle, but got solidly stopped after that.

Now I have some breathing room...Then suddenly, PORTUGAL attacks.

What the hell!? Portugal, my ally, who I had "Perfect" relationship with, just randomly starts attacking me.

I'm playing on hard(campaign)/medium(battle) difficulty. Is it normal for the AI to just hate me, or am I just unlucky.

Were the Portugese allied with Aragon? You can always expect AI to band together against the player, so if you end up at war with the ally of one of your allies, you can expect a broken alliance. Aggression is normal in Stainless Steel. You can generally expect the AI to attack you if you are neighbors regardless of relations.

Depends on the campaign AI. If its an aggressive one and you're blocking off its expansion... your toast, alliance be damned.

Demonic Spoon...Welcome to the TWC forums...

If you please...SS variation and submods that your using please....Now remember, Iberia has four factions plus France and Genoa all going for the same pie. No one!!! in that scenario is going to be your friend. The only thing you can hope for is a little breathing time to prepare for what's coming. In my campaign in Stainless Steel Standards, I opted to take out Arragon from the get go and take the excommunication just so all my enemies could be kept in sight.

Anytime you are in confined quarters like Italy or Spain, you will never have any long terms friends...

6.2 vanilla reminded me of the fine tradition of the moo3 mods... they got vanilla, strawberry, tropical, chocolate and last I've seen a boysenberry was mentioned

Hopefully I'll never see that as a complete replacement for a version numbering system

Playing as Leon-Castille I would vouch for taking out Portugal or Aragon in a blitz before going all out against the moors.

If you take out Portugal Aragon has no real reason to attack you if you are allied, take on the moors together until the iberian peninsula is secured. Then backstab the Aragonese. I'm going to try this in my next campaign. Should be achievable by turns : 5-10 take out Portugal. 20-30 iberian peninsula, 35 Aragon.

And then it's time to invade whatever part of europe you have in mind really.

No warring with wooden pitchforks and soup ladels. I'll settle for turtling til I bristle with shiny steel Armour and pointy head bashing maces...

I actually like my early wars to get a decent foothold, say 20 settlements. After that I do a midgame turtle - using assasins for fun - you can really turn the tide of any war with 15 assasins sabotaging every building every turn of the enemy of your choosing.

Then I usually or tech up to get the late ' goodies ' or do some crazy things such as raiding constantinople with a strike force. Or taking all of England and France ( keep them both alive ) and give all of France to England and all of England to France - hilarious - duh I'm a game nerd

Hi, first of all, you should send a diplomat to the pope to get in good relations with him, then declare a ceasefire with the moors (i dont play SS 6.2, i stick to SS 6.1 for a more realistic diplomacy, in my current campaign i even have vassals who love me and they stick that way), wipe out portugal (that should be too hard) and defend against aragonese and ally with france, so you could have a buffer

Yeah, you just have to hate Portugal.
In my last campagin(Crusader states, migrated to Tunis, making Egypt even more of a super-power.)
I had just finished consolidating my base of operations. (Three settlements) when, of course, a Crusade was called upon me(The crusader states... sigh.... that pope.)
But nobody showed up for something like fifteen turns. So I let go of my defence.
The very next turn a full stack of Portugese landed in Tunis.

I got bored of that one when I took over Italy.
My new one is a Holy Roman Empire Migration to Ireland.
The migration itself is complete at this stage.
(Except those spare generals I didn't want... they fell victim to an unfortunate boating accident..)

I got an AI upgrade where it's harder to improve relations, but allies have a very small chance of backstabbing you if you're at Very Good or Perfect with them.

In other words, sucks for you!

Edit: SS 6.3 coming? I thought SS is the redheaded stepchild of King Kong now that TATW is so popular. I don't know if I'd use it, though. I like this combo of 6.1 and sub-mods, with a few graphical/text improvements I did myself to dip my toe into the big lake that is modding.
