Customise special Abilities

Hey all. I would really like to add my own special unit abilities to empire total war.

I would like to add a new ability that would change a units stats and formation when on or off. In the DBEditor I have noticed that the standard special abilities seem to be hard coded as you can only choose them and not alter their affects.

Where would I begin if I wanted to implament a new ability?
