Icon4 Help! Very serious RTW problem! D:

Recently I installed a mod "Rome: Total Realism"

Apparently there is no uninstall. I uninstalled Rome Total war, deleted the extra files and reinstalled.

    The problem:

The game launches fine, main menu is normal.. but when I go ingame... I crash to the desktop.
Ive looked into the advanced ways of removing Rome Total war through the registry and etc... but Im not "advanced" enough to go through it. Plus I dont want to mess up my computer >_>.

If anyone, ANYONE can help. Please let me know.

    I miss playing RTW

EDIT - Yes I run Vista

See what is hidden in the users folder. Unhide all files and folders in Folder Options and use the search function in Computer.

Uninstall using Rome and BI's uninstallers, delete the folders, again, run a registry cleaner like Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, reboot.

Disable the UAC and install in another folder like c:|Games.

Tried it yesterday, I followed the manual install and everything.

Nothing, it still crashes when I go ingame.

Remove it from recycle bin, I would look in your user folders under vista then find creative assembly or what ever its named for RTW, i would also recommend you do a good check on what is installed, add/remove programs look for the mod/game. Alot of mods create a separate folder in 2 places, if that does not help reinstall the mod and find out were it put it. MAKE sure you have show hidden folders. Make sure YOU DELETE LOCAL CONTENT UNDER STEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That may be the solution lol. GL

You have something left on your harddrive. Use regedit and search for anything resembling Rome, Activision, Creative Assembly, Total War Toal Realism, etc.

In the Installshield/Uninstallshield folder, look through the keys and if there are any for Rome, BI, Activision, etc., delete them.

    Where would that be?

More details so I can more a bit more "specific" help:

    Things that I did:
    - Uninstalled Rome TW to try and get rid of RTR.
    - Reinstalled RTW.
    - Started up, main menu and everything
    - Go into battle, crashes to desktop.
    - Tried uninstalling and reinstalling again, deleted extra files
    - Installed again, still crashing
    - Tried the manual uninstall, some keys do not show up, same result, crashing.

I tried looking and searching for those hidden files, even with the option for hidden files checked.
It seems like RTW is broken forever for me

If you install a mod I'd strongly recommend taking a copy of the RTW folder and applying the mod to that folder. This means if you want to stop playing the mod it's simply a matter of deleting that folder and not having to uninstall RTW. If you want more than one mod installed simply take another copy of the RTW folder and install the mod over that.

I do this even with mods that are 'mod-foldered'.

    The problem is then battles.
Does it happen when you try to load a battle, during batlle, end of battle?
Is it any certain units or all units?
Could you fight battles in RTR?
Have you changed any hardware or software between the RTR install and its uninstall?
    Post your dxdiag.

It instantly crashes as soon as I click "Quick Battle" or whatever i click to start the battle, a second later, BOOM crash.

    All units, I guess..
Yes I could fight RTR battles. Its when I uninstalled and reinstalled it started to crash.

Thanks for the fast reply though

Just to catchup and maybe missed something, maybe not,

Are you running with the UAC enabled or disabled? If enabled, try it disabled.

For a one person pc, and that person is willing to take responsibility for what goes on in it and on it, in my opinion, it causes more problems than it cures.

If you really want to know if all your problems are related to Microsoft, do this shopping list:
    1. uninstall BI.
    2. uninstall RTW.
    3. delete the folders the have the Rome Total War folders in Program Files and users\username\appdata\roaming.
    4. run a registry cleaner.
    5. reboot.
    6. diable the UAC.
    7. install in a folder like C:\Games.

    Ive done step 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7.

Installing the game in a different folder does not work every time I try to start it it says "Unable to specify file path" or something like that.

    Ill try 3 and 6..

    I dont have BI btw.

Alright, this is what I have accomplished so far:

    - Uninstalled RomeTW [INCLUDING THE DEMO]
    - Searched for hidden files, nothing showed up. Previously deleted others though
    - Disabled UAC
    - Ran a "TuneUp" Registry cleaner [If that is not the right software, Ill get my dad to do it]
    - Going to restart now

Ill let you know how it goes, after do I install again?

EDIT - AHA! I found some extra hidden files under a hidden folder. I deleted those, going to restart now

EDIT - Alright, I restarted. I ran RegScanner to try and find leftover values. I did find a few, is it safe to delete them?

One thing that can happen when you move the RTW install and attempt to install a patch the original location can be retained in the registry - which could be one reason why you are getting the 'unable to specify the path' message. Some of the patches won't let you specify the path and will by default be applied to the original folder.

Make sure that you delete any old desktop shortcuts as well.

If you are going to try 3 and 6 make sure that you start from 1 again - a nice clean start.

Alright. I also downloaded the Eusing Cleaner thing. Im running it right now also.

Then Ill scan again and delete whats left. After I think everything is removed, is it safe to re-install?

If it still doesnt work will I have to do everything all over again?

EDIT - Finally, all the values are gone, there is ONE value that is left, cannot delete it though. It says "Unable to delete" it doesnt seem to be involved with the game though. Its classified under Data: c:\program files\.....\rome - total war.

Right click the file and see if it is read-only and/or hidden.

If it is, see if you can remove the checkmark, and then delete it.

If it's a long registry number, there is another way.
