Default The Digital Economy Act 2010

What is the mudpits opinion on this?

Here's a rough overview from tpb:

    http://thepiratebay.org/special/2010_uk_dea.php

basically the government can cut off internet access
to british users involved in piracy

    • Websites will be blocked for alleged copyright infringement.
    • Families accused of sharing copyrighted files will be disconnected without trial. They will have to pay to appeal.

    >Disconnection or "technical measures" like bandwidth throttling will kick in if file sharing does not drop by an incredible 70%. There are no alternative punishments to disconnection, no matter what the damage it will cause, and there is no statutory limit on the length of these disconnections, called, in the words of the Act, "temporary account suspension".

It's a disgusting curtailing of freedom and the British government simply kowtowing to the pressure exerted by the film industry. This bill also includes a provision for blocking websites and curtailing freedom of speech.

You can always revolt against the Monarchy and Government. We did and look how it all turned out.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Funny...except most people in the UK don't give a damn about freedom, this is the result. I am mildly amused but quite saddened by the fact that I am the exact sort to get disconnected

I wouldn't be so sure about this, Denny. There's a reason this bill was pushed through in the dying days of the parliament: so that people could not read it properly and mount an effective protest.

Labour has been doing worse things than this for 13 years and they got elected again and again.

I'm pleased that they are dying as a party, I will do anything I can to hasten the demise of these...authoritarian douchebags is probably the best thing I can think to say.

Yes, welcome to the People's Monarchy of Great Britain.

All hail Peter Mandelson our glorious guide through this great leap forward.

Its a terrible bill and was thrown out by the Lords for good reason. I think its shameful that this was rushed through in the closing days of the parliamentary session without proper and full debate.

Does action need to be taken against piracy? Yes.

Should people be unilaterally disconnected without having a chance to put their case? Not to mention, why should households be punished for the actions of only 1 member?

This is poorly thought out and incredibly draconian.

I don't think that qualifies for an automatic yes. For a start it missed out the very relevant question of 'can action be taken against piracy' and the answer to that in Sweden showed that answer to be uncertain. The smart people over there who want to pirate found ways around similar legislation.

Does action need to be taken? Yes, I thinks thats pretty obvious. But I would concede that not every action the various industries consider to be "copyright infringement" should be actionable piracy.

Can action be taken? Harder to answer indeed. I would prefer not to, but to take an alternative solution of creating copyright laws that can actually deal with the possibilities of a digital age. Until that happens, fighting piracy will be a losing battle on all fronts. Especially when antiquated copyright laws and militant rights holders criminalise people and conduct that most people would consider to be faultless and fair.

It's not just anti-piracy measures that make this bill so distasteful. This is a shameful repetition of what I wrote in the thread I linked earlier but as this seems to be the new hotbed for its discussion, especially with new, distinguished blood, here we go:

Stephen Timms for the government said that it would not want to see the clause used to restrict freedom of speech – but gave no assurance that sites like Wikileaks would not be blocked.
    (Source)

Now if that doesn't get you worried, I don't know what will.

I would have sincerely loved for a question on this bill to have been raised during the domestic policy debate on April 15th but I don't think enough people are actually aware of it and will only become aware once they start getting their internet cut off for what their children have been illegally downloading.

I couldn't agree more with you but there are more factors than just voter apathy. Conservative incompetence being foremost amongst them. They only really started to look credible again in 2006 once Cameron had got settled.

Ironically, that's one of the few places where they don't enforce copyrights.
    Copyrights are anti-communist, you see?

Although they do have quite a penchant for blocking websites, which I believe is what he was alluding to more.
