    Default Opening the Mod

This is an amazingly nooby question but I have downloaded and installed SPQR in my Gold Edition Rome:Total War, and everything ran fine, but all I can see is the readme and formations info etc. How do I actually start the mod? Think I had this problem when I downloaded SPQR many years ago, but I can't remember how I got around it :S

    Thanks for the help.

SPQR installs over your RTW. This means that the mod alters the original RTW files into what is SPQR. You will no longer be able to play vanilla if you installed it correctly. So when you use the ordinary rtw.exe (or default shortcut) you should be playing SPQR.
If this isn't the case, your install is flawed. Most probably because you are using Windows Vista, and you haven't disabled UAC and/or you have rtw installed in the program files folder.

Ok thanks. Yea I am using Vista. How do I disable UAC? So I can't have RTW installed in program files?

Go into the directory where you installed SPQR and launch the RomeTW.exe in the folder.

To have it as an SPQR icon on your desktop:
Right-click the RomeTW.exe file in your folder, click "send to desktop". Having done that, rename the exe on your desktop to distinguish it from vanilla RTW. Then, right click the icon, click properties and click change icon. There is an SPQR icon in the folder "SPQR_Readme".

Vista protects that folder in particular so it hinders the installer or any other programs for that matter to overwrite or alter any files there.
You disable UAC by going to the control panel -> user accounts and somewhere in there is an option that reads something along "Enable or disable User Account Control/UAC".
I'm not using an English language version, so I'm not entirely sure what the exact translations are, but hopefully you got a hint
