    Default Valhalla Rising

Ok I havn't seen this on here so I apologise if I missed it, Anyway I know how much of history buffs most of us are on here and this new film looks pretty kool, heres the review from Empire and the trailer...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Plot
A thousand years ago. One-Eye (Mads Mikkelsen), an enigmatic, mute warrior-slave, is freed from captivity and falls in with a party of Christian Vikings who set out for the Holy Land but cross the wrong sea and reach America, where they are overwhelmed by the vast land and its potentially hostile inhabitants.Review
Following the Pusher trilogy and Bronson, Nicolas Winding Refn — Denmark’s second-most committed auteur — turns away from contemporary criminality to deliver a dream of a Viking movie. Valhalla Rising is not the exercise in action-oriented ethnography we might expect from Mel Gibson (who has his own Norseploitation movie in the works) or a tricked-up genre film like Pathfinder (which it slightly echoes) or Outlander, but a hallucinatory, fable-like extrapolation from a single historical fact — a pile of stones on the Delaware shore, well away from where the rumoured Norse settlements in North America were supposed to be.

Mads Mikkelsen, with no dialogue, has to play a mystic archetype, and emerges as a monolithic screen presence, following his Casino Royale villain with another wonky-eye turn — a tethered god of violence who has psychic flashes of horrors to come. One-Eye is the film’s lead, and an emotional tie with a boy (Maarten Stevenson) who becomes his sidekick marks him as a hero, but he could as easily be an immortal trickster guiding this band of venal, violent pilgrims to a realm where they can be appropriately punished. Shot in spectacular Scotland, Valhalla Rising has a gorgeous deep-focus look which harks back to the Vincent Ward of The Navigator and the Tarkovsky of Andrei Rublev. Here, the past is alien and hostile terrain, with people reduced to brutal, impulsive behaviour because their environment, while breathtaking, is unbearably savage.

A cast of battered-looking Vikings show frozen faces in close-up, but are mostly here to die in a horrible manner — felled by arrows, disembowelled with axes, smitten by the elements. But it’s a slow, reflective film which builds from small physical details to a transcendent vision: Refn’s crime movies are theatrical and shot through with fantasy, and this isn’t an overly literal slice of horrible history. Many won’t have patience for it, but it will pick up devotees who’ll watch it over and over.

    Verdict
Valhalla Rising gets into your mind and stays there. You can argue what, if anything, it’s trying to say, but it is impressive cinema.

Yeah. I mean, look at how many trailers used the theme from Dragonheart. It doesn't make the movie bad, or the trailer bad even. As long as it fits.

And from the look of this trailer, it fits. Oh, does it fit. This movie looks really grimy and brutal; the right kind of period piece.

I like that actor, I saw him in a film about the Danish resistance in the 1940's. So it's probably good as it might be in Danish!

I do not fear the coursing of the Irish sea

    Flame and Citron. Awesome movie.
I am pumped about this new Viking movie. Hated Pathfinder so I hope it doesn't fool me like that one did.

Just a few movies that have used music from other movies in their trailers - Avatar, Fly Boys("My name is Lincoln", from "The Beach"), Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Sunshine(Lux Aeterna - "Requiem for a Dream"). Using music from other movies is common practice.

    Just watched this..

About 3/4 of the way through I was thinking this was among the best films I've seen in a long long time. Not for those spoon fed on 'Hollywood's' view of historical accuracy, nor for those with a short span of attention. It's dark, gloomy, at times brutal and in parts out and out weird .. Some of you may actually feel a tad nauseous as it slowly (very slowly) assaults the senses.

As for the whether I still think it's a great film. I really don't know. I'm not sure I'll actually 'get it' for a couple of days. I'm pretty sure it's about redemption, but maybe not. I imagine this will become a cult classic as people try to decipher some sort of meaning from it. Maybe it has one, but I don't think I have the capacity to see it.

oh, and don't be put off by the title. It's a much better film than the attempted dramatic name suggests.

Overall it was a decent movie for me as of now.

The movie was kind of slow moving, although it went with the setting decently so you were kind of drawn into a lull with the story. Then at points it would shock you out of that lull. And in those points it can become a brutal, yet honest, portrayal of violence. I do recommend it to any kind of Norse/Viking fan.

Also everything Satanus said...as he said it better.

I didn't like the ending though.

Just got around watching it. It sure is something else...and have yet to figure out all whereabouts.

I think its pretty evident the terminator guy is Odin. The old god and the old warrior-ethos held hostage having to perform tricks as some sort of side show monkey for some earthly kings and merchants.

The old gods days seem counted, the warrior-ethos perverted, and Christianity is on the march taking over, while marketizing the hearts of men again with the same warrior-ethos of Valhalla, but this time promising the promised land in Palestine.

What happens after that is still puzzling me...he sure picked his death, but why America? Etc...

    Any ideas?

    Epic movie btw.

My theory is that he wanted to die at the hand of some uncorrupted warriors and followers of heathen beliefs, like himself. The New World was still untainted by the wretchedness of Christianity.

I've tried watching this movie 3 times, and fell asleep all 3 times within the first 20 minutes. The pacing is extremely slow, I hear great things and it's suposed to be this awesome action movie, and it has Vikings wich is allways cool, but I can't help falling asleep wish I could stay awake to actually watch the full movie once, but the boring start makes this almost impossible
