They do get bayonets on their guns. Some infantry don't get them though. Light infantry and skirmishers, if memory serves. Also, if you just started, you might have to research the bayonets first, since you have to get the plug bayonet before the ring bayonet, which is always attached to a gun.

Yeah, you might want to research the bayonets first or get it from some other nation. Plug bayonets takes away your ability to fire for the rest of the battle if you tell your infantry to equip them. Ring and Socket bayonets allow you to fire and they will keep them on the whole battle I think.

the thrust animation stays if it's a missed thrust like stabbing someone with the barral whcih really does hurt as well, more so than being hit with the butt of the musket in a thrust motion. You will not see soldiers kill their targets with a thrust from the barral if they do not have a bayonent but some of the animation stayed for visual reasons I seems, since you do not need a bayonent to beat someone in a gutt with a musle of a musket. Normally you will not see a kill blow with a thrust unless there is a bayonet though attached, it will be a melee style club with the stock in a few different ways.

How long have you been playing? Bayonets are the very first military tech you can research.
In the beginning though, you still have to manually fix them before charging (making the unit unable to fire from then on).
A later bayonet tech remedies this.
