    Default Video files?

I was wondering if the wonder tech wizards of twc could tell me how to convert .xvid files to .avi or mp4 files.

XVID is an AVI file it's just a open source container rather then a closed source like DIVX. Now I'm a bit stuck in the mud type of person and I've only recently started converting to H.264 files (that includes MP4) as I learnt all about video encoding back in the early 00's when Xvid and DIVX was new so bear with me as they may be better ways of doing this.

Download Handbrake, I've just had a quick look at my installation and it would appear it can read .avi files and output them as h.264 (to a container of your choice which in your case is MP4). However I wouldn't recommend MP4 if you can encode to .MKV which is a superior format to MP4, you get better quality and a smaller file size. It's very straight forward to use, you even have pre set profiles on the right so if it's for your Ipod/Itouch just input the video file, select the preset and go.

If you really want to go high tech and you have a good video card say a Geforce 8000 card or newer or Radeon 4000 card you can encode using your video card which is a lot quicker the only the draw back is the decent software isn't free (ATI has a free one but it only reads .MPEG files).
