I have a decent enough PC and the campaign shadows still lag mine so I always turn them off.

There should be a thread like this is this forum, try to search for it.

    go to Stainless_Steel_6\Data\terrain\aerial_map\ships
zip or rar the contents and then delete the originals.
Same should apply to Stainless_Steel_6\Data\terrain\aerial_map\wagons although I haven't used that fix myself.
    Always make backups.
Searching the forum helps alot as well....

Might be helpful to give information such as this right at the beginning.

Bear with me as I'm going out of a limp here: Whatever defragmented your drive didn't do a good job.

Aside from a general "when its not broken, dont fix it" advise:

Download "defraggler" (http://www.filehippo.com/download_defraggler) install it and just scan the drive medieval total war is installed on.
That will give you a nice visual of your situation and list all files currently fragmented. If its red, its bad.

I've had the same problem as you and you fix it by turning off the shadows in the campaign map. The trees will look a bit funny but it's well worth the extra speed in campaign mode

Actually his problem is that everything worked fine until he "defragmented" his drive. Everything else is mentioned or linked in the second post already
