Default A question about city battles

Simple really: how do you win them? I'm only doing the Road to Independence right now, so maybe it's different in the full game, but I don't see any obvious way to win them. Is there a building you have to take, or do you just have to rout the enemy?

I think in "City" battles you have to kill or rout the enemy, but in "Fort" battles, you can also win by take the square in the middle.

OK, I can live with that. It's actually far more realistic than Rome/Medieval's system whereby you can ride three horses (not three units of horses) up to the square, keep them there for three minutes and that's it - the whole population says 'we must bow down to The Three Horses'! No - making everyone run away is a far more realistic way to go about things - well done, CA!

You can occupy the middle too in city battles, which is why there is a spiked circle in the middle of the city(but just DESTROY the enemy for good measure)
What the hell happened to this WORLD?

I have noticed that it only pops up in some city battles, not all of them. Which ones do they appear in?

Yes, where is it? Is it in the stone fort (I've seen it in wooden forts), or in the bunch of houses/other buildings next to the city? Or have I just not encountered a real City yet (having only played the RTI campaign?)

I have been playing the Grand Campaign as France and I haven't seen it yet. So I have the some questions as you.

It's in all cities with settlement defenses.

the best way to deal with enemies in a city is to bombard the buildings. Anybody caught in one when it collapses just straight up dies.
