Really Serious Rome Total War Problem

Hello everyone,

I hope this is the correct forum. After along time of playing Barbarian Invasion I decided to start a new campaign on the original Rome Total War. After about 5 minutes of playing a campaign, my computer crashes totally as if the power cable has been unplugged (no CTD it just turns off). I've tried reinstalling and it still happens. This doesn't happen on any other game or application. There's also no information about the error in the RTW log files.

Can anyone help? I'm completely lost

OS: Windows Vista SP2 (UAC is off)
RTW Game Box: Rome Total War Anthology
RTW Version: 1.5
RTW:BI Version: 1.6

First of all what others games do you have installed and are they working?
Second, that will be helpful to others if have posted the dxdiag report as well. Here is what you need to get the dxdiag, press start-select run-write dxdiag.exe and ok. Then it's loaded into windows, select the save directX information button - in notepad (copy it) and paste it into your reply.

Thanks for your reply. I only have SimCity 4 installed (released in 2003), which runs perfectly. Here's the copy and pasted dxdiag report.

I noticed it says the DirectX version is 11, maybe this is the problem?

If BI was acting up, too, I would have a better idea. SimCity 4 will play on almost anything. I have it loaded on Win 7 64bit and it plays.

I have noticed your newest drivers for anything are two years old or older. There could be corruption over time.

Try finding new graphics drivers for your chipset.

Just in case it is directx, install http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en. vista and 7 will never find it.

If you haven't, disable the UAC. If it's a one person notebook, no reason for it on.

I don't how do you reinstall the game, but you should always begin with the unistallation follow by a clean reboot. Then your PC start up windows then delete the current 'rtw' folder, now you can try to reinstall rtw again and reboot the computer. If that's not working maybe there is something wrong with either the ATI-drivers or the directX files. If you have the ATI-crossfire function enable when disable it.

Sometimes windows not always update the register keys, but a clean reboot should be enough and also that helps to delete the empty game folder just in case. I've a similar error my self once in while.

Yesterday though my laptop turned off again but outside of RTW (so not a RTW problem). So I think it's probably overheating (maybe RTW is so demanding that it makes it overheat faster?). I'll be cleaning the fans and things.

Again thank you all for your replies (I didn't know Vista and 7 didn't come with DirectX 9).
