The Roman remains (including the (not sure if it was the eastern or northern) tower on the pic there) are mostly underground. Some of them have been partially destroyed during the constructions of various monumental projects in the last 1-2 centuries, alas. Only a few, like the part of the city walls on the pic, are partially exposed in an underpass. Though currently there are talks about an overground exposition of a larger part of them (or an underglass one, maybe). Then there's the recently discovered huge amphitheatre, a part of which currently forms a fitness club in a hotel over it. Yeah, I'm disgusted as well...

Nobody really cared about history around these parts(Balkans),so it would be nice to see that exposition talks come true.

But the people that matter (government etc) usually don't. Too much history in these lands for people to actually care about it.

The European one is the one that matters. The Asian part is the home of blind fools (+rep if you get the reference).

Here's one more ruin not far from my town, the Šarengrad fort. Completely unknown and abandoned, even I didn't know about it. It's located on Danube not far from Ilok.

First mentioned in 1405 Šarengrad chronicle and it said that it was much bigger fort before, but part of it crumbled by the force of Danube. It was called castle Athya, Achia and Aća.

    Here's another jewel.
    Crusader Fort in Vrana.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

In 9. century it was known as Castrum Aureanae and it was a Benedictine monastery that king Zvonimir gave to Pope in 1076. Templars control Vrana from 1136-1312 and it falls to Turks in 1529. 20% of the fort remains today and its destruction was done by Venice in 17. century, and materials were reused till recently.

Sadly I can't find any reconstructions or plans of this fort with fascinating history.

I have already mentioned old town Samobor in one of previous posts

Here's how it looked in 18. century

I wonder would it be morally correct to rebuild it? Original ruins would have to be destroyed, which means that only a copy would be built instead of original heritage. On the other hand it's just sad to have ruins on the top of the hill.

The reconstruction of Smederevo fortress has begun! The works are going to be the biggest in the last 25 years. The plan is to restore Smederevo fortress as it was before 5th June 1941,when it got through awful lot of damage. The Government of Serbia also put Smederevo, among other sites,on the UNESCO waiting list.If we enter the UNESCO list,we'll get more than enough money for the reconstruction.Let's hope in a few years younger generation will be able to see this beauty again.

Good to hear. Would be really nice to visit sometime.
