    Default Unable to recruit ents

Hello, I'm unable to recruit ents. I'm playing Silvian elves, and I just traded Fangorn from the Rohans. Problem is, Fangorn is missing the building that makes ent recruitment possible. In my previous campaign, the building was there when I conquered Fangorn.

Could Rohan have destroyed the building? What can I do now? Will the building be available later when Fangorn grows?

Unless this has changed in 1.4 (I'm playing 1.3) Ents are mercenaries, recruited from outside the city.

I duno for sure about the building (maybe you can rebuild it at some time, but no clue), you are always able to recruit ents in fangorn as mercenarys.
First at turn 30, then roughly every 30 turns.

i think fangorn must be conquer by an "evil" faction before the ents go to war (make them recrutable)... only a guess but on my isengard campain i have capture fangorn and the "/$%?&*( have spanwed after, i could have destroyed the building at this point but find it was a cheap shot

No, they are recruitable as mercenaries.

I think you use RR/RC then, like i do.
I cant remember i get "fangorn-city" and find it destroyed...
anyway, even its gone, you still can recruit them as mercenarys.
With the building you can recruit 2 units per ~30 rounds, without it 1.

One time i ve played the silvans, rohan got fangorn.
Suddenly i get a message i am in war with rohan.
Then i saw that fangorn now belongs to me and there was 3 units of ents who seemed to conquered it.
I only got that one time.

The ent goes to war either a dark faction conqueres it or you recruit firstly a mercenary unit.

Means it rebelled to you. I don't have to explain the point of Loyalty Revolts, do I?

Make sense we have a good answer

Maybe rohan exterminated fangorn and the building was destroyed.

Not in 1.4, which is the latest version but I believe in 1.0 or 1.1 you were able to. Ents are only available to High Elves and Silvan Elves.

To sum it up. Ents are available since TATW 1.3 and only for Silvan Elves and High Elves.
And they can't be recruited - they only can be hired as mercenaries for the elven Factions.
There is no way to recruit them in any settlement with any building. Only Mercenaries.

Actually ther are two mods for standalone Ent Factions where you actually can recruit Ents.
This one by Axnsan and this one by boboav.

I'm playing a Sylvan Elf campaign as well. On multiple occasions I've sent a general to Fangorn in the hope of recruiting some ent mercenaries, but I've never been able to actually do so. Any reason why that might be the case? I'm close to turn 200 now. Is it a specific part of Fangorn or just anywhere in the Fangorn region? Does it depend on who owns Fangorn? I'm playing vanilla TATW 3.1.

From what I hear ents are powerful. So i'd like to find some to help me smash Mordor!

Ents are not recruitable nor do they appear as mercenaries in vanilla v3.1. A unit can be given to the Silvan Elves for a short time if Fanghorn is first captured by the Silvan Elves and then granted autonomy.

If you want to be able to recruit Ents, you will have to use a sub-mod, such as Baron Samedi's.

Ah, ok. That clarifies a lot. Thanks.

So Bardha if you want to play with ents and not instal any submods, you will have to:
    1. Conquer the region of Fangorn as a Good faction. Silvan Elves and Rohan are the easiest to do this with. I am 100% certain it works with Rohan.
    2. After a couple of turns, a message will pop up saying that the Ents want autonomy just like they had since the primeval times (or something like that). Accept this. Please be careful that you are then no longer able to change the taxrate or choose the construction that takes place.
    3. After some more turns you will get another message. This one tells you that you have been given a unit of Ents and that you should be careful with them.

Go to Fangorn and the Ents should be right there in the settlement garrison. I've heard that there is a time limit on how many turns you can use them. I do not know this time limit, so it would be nice if someone could copy+past and explain the code here.

If I read the code correctly, then on or after 11 turns there is a 50% chance each turn that the ents will go home

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Code:

    ;#########################Ent-Timer
    monitor_event FactionTurnStart FactionIsLocal
    and I_CompareCounter ents_at_war >= 1
    inc_counter ents_at_war 1
    end_monitor
    monitor_event FactionTurnStart FactionIsLocal
    and I_CompareCounter ents_at_war >= 11
    and RandomPercent > 50

    destroy_units milan autonomy_1
    destroy_units scotland autonomy_1
    destroy_units turks autonomy_1
    destroy_units egypt autonomy_1

    destroy_units moors autonomy_1

Wow so you most likely only get to use the Ents for 11 or 12 turns? That makes them actually quite worthless to be honest. It will take at least 5/6 turns to take them to the nearest battleground (during that time they cost around 2500/3000 in upkeep?).

How worthwhile does everyone here consider giving Fangorn autonomy to be? I mean, you're not really going to get much out of it as a settlement because of the 'reduced building capabilities', but a unit that can only actively fight for 5 turns and costs a of upkeep seems more of a burden than a gift.

Perhaps Ents should be reworked to not be turn-dependent but region dependent? So they are able to roam around nothern-Rohan, Fangorn, Silvan Elves territory, Isengard and around the Misty Mountains (but not near the actual cities of the Misty Mountains since that would make Ents too strong vs OotMM). That way the Ents are of use to Rohan, Silvan Elves and High Elves. It would also make sense as I imagine Ents like to walk around in forests but not inside of mountains, nor would they like to go too far from home.

What do you guys say rework needed/unneeded, balanced/unbalanced?

    edit:
Made a map to show the possible territories:

I used Shingen his map from this thread:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=512996

    another edit:

Actually, I just realized that my map/idea would make Ents even worse than they are now. Perhaps they should have a limited number of turns outside of forest territory, that way you can still move them from the Silvan Elven territories near Moria, to Mirkwood. You could also walk from west-Isengard to Imladris. There should be something that limits you from using them to invade Moria though. The first times you walk them outside of the balanced territories you will get a message that the Ents do not feel at home there, and they long for fertile ground.
