Has anyone seen this new series by the BBC? You can still watch episode 1 on iPlayer, and 2 has just been released. It's a fascinating look at one of the fastest growing urban centres in the world, where the vast majority of people live in (at best) slum like conditions. But it's not about misery at all, completely the opposite. It's one of the most uplifting documentaries I've seen in a very long time.

It shows how resourceful the human race can be, and follows some heart-warming stories of people living on and around a huge dump. One man, Joseph, has an enterprise of buying and selling scrap metal, and manages to afford a one room apartment and supports a wife and two girls. Not only is he incredibly intelligent but an entertaining guy to watch. Another is scavenging to pay for the recording of his own CD. Everyone pulls together, there's jokes and big smiles all round, and they all seem much more happy and content with their lives that most westerners I know. I wish TV would show this side of Africa more often.

For those who can't access iPlayer, first episode can be watched on youtube.

    Great stuff, highly reccomended

I check into small hotel a few kilometers from Kiev. It is late. I am tired. I tell woman at desk I want a room. She tells me room number and give key. "But one more thing comrade; there is one room without number and always lock. Don't even peek in there." I take key and go to room to sleep. Night comes and I hear trickling of water. It comes from the room across. I cannot sleep so I open door. It is coming from room with no number. I pound on door. No response. I look in keyhole. I see nothing except red. Water still trickling. I go down to front desk to complain. "By the way who is in that room?" She look at me and begin to tell story. There was woman in there. Murdered by her husband. Skin all white, except her eyes, which were red. I tell her I don't give a . Stop the water trickling or give me refund. She gave me 100 ruble credit and free breakfast. Such is life in Moscow
