What to understand under "firepower"?

I know at sea the more firepower the better, because you will make more impact, but what about land-cannons? Range and accuracy are important, bt what does firepower does, since a canonball will kill any men, whether the firepower is high (like in the early fixed cannons), or low?

I believe as far as land cannons go, it firepower is a measurement of how effective an artillery piece is against walls and other structures.
