Default The LoTR Film Trilogy Discussion.

The Peter Jackson LOTR-trilogy has a lot of really stupid choices, ranging from minor stuff as Legolas being a superhero to major dealbreakers like the army of the dead winning the battle of pelennor fields with the magic of cgi, and therefore ruining the entire battle.

But what has the movies done right? And did they do anything better than the books?

Personally I think they did a great job with the Moria orcs, the design mixed natural cavedwellers like insects and deepsea fish into a seemless and interesting style.
Also the Mūmakil were great, although they were used in a really retarded version of the battle of pelennor fields.
Also Boromir was a great character in the movies, seems to have more personality.

    Go discussion!

I'd say the Balrog is is one of the biggest "lore standards" set by the movie I can't really imagine a different Balrog, nor do I remember how I imagined it prior to the movie... And I think in the books it's not surrounded by some flaming aura (whatever you might call it), rather some kind of shapeless phantom, a vague monstrous creature of the dark... I'm very keen on the flaming aura

They used childish Hobbits in the Movies. In the Books Frodo and his companions
were over 50 years old and the picture of a wrinkled old Halfling really annoyed me.

But i did use the picture of young hobbits for my imagination instead. Thank good

I just wish they had done a couple retakes on the scene in Bree where he is explaining who the Nazgul are. I get the feeling he was trying to remember his lines as he spoke.

What I liked was the deeper sense of urgency and desperation before the Battle of Helm's Deep in the film, Haldir not withstanding of course. Serkis(sp?), I thought, did a phenomenal job on Gollum.

Lastly, that drawing of the Balrog we see in Saruman's book; does any body remember that from a kids story book from the 70's or 80's?

Frodo was the oldest, he was the only one who was 50 and he hadn't aged since he was 33, so maybe this was the reason why he surrounded himself with younger hobbits like Merry and Pippin (Pippin wasn't even an adult in hobbit terms at the start of the journey).

Ans as hobbits seem to have aged slower and came of age with 33 it might be OK to picture them younger tha about 30 what their age in the book was.

Well seems there are some examples where the movie did it right, but so far I don't see a point where the movie surpassed the books.

i really liked the charge of theoden at the battle of penellor. it is as i had imagined it (freeking chill going down my neck).
however, his speech was a shorter version of the one in the books wich was, by far, better.

Considering my taste the passages where the movies are good they still fit to the book, and where the movies ed up they always contradict the book.
And I saw FotR before I read the books.

    What.

    No need to scream.

Also tolkien might like the visuals (Who doesn`t?), but the film butchered his books story wise. Faramir trying to seize the ring? Aragorn killing an diplomat? Elves at helms deep? No Tom?

No, no. PJ used tolkiens work as a base and corrupted it into a visual appealing money maker.

I agree I was very disappointed to find out that the old forest and barrow parts of the book were cut out

But the Mouth of Sauron wasn't much of a diplomat, he tried to threaten everyone too much do what I say or

I wouldn't mind Tom too much if he stopped singing, he had to be there to advance the plot from the old forest but PJ cut that bit too

Still, it was a very important part in the books that he wasn`t killed by them. He feared that they might kill him, like evil guys would have done, but they didn`t because they were good. That scene was quite important to show the difference between good and evil. The movie ruined the whole pointe.
