unbeatable RTW tactic

My friend keeps on doing an annoying tactic i cant beat in RTW.
I think its unbeatable
he makes a large phalanx circle around about four units of cretan archers and about three heavy onager units. I have tried everything but i cant beat him!!!!!

get more onagers xD +archers + some cavalry(don't get any infantry). It works.

get more onagers... get some good missle tropps and his troops will drop like flies... oh and get soem calvary once his phalanx breaks down and run

Get lots of archers and target the units that are facing away from them ie. shoot them in the back. Kill his archers first by spreading yours out and putting the in loose formation. They shouldn't last very long. because they'll be packed in tight. Keep your cav out of range of the onagers until this part is done. They should be gone and the onagers too in two minutes or so. Then use your remaining arrows to shoot into the backs to take down the numbers. Finally charge your cavalry into a weak spot. A 'join' in the box is a good target.

The tactic you're describing is what is called a n00b box. Look it up on youtube, I'm sure there will be plenty of videos of people breaking them.

The weakness of a noob box is a lot of units packed tightly together and it doesn't move so it can't attack you

Go Rome
Get 3 heavy onagers and spread them out
Get 4-6 units of archers
and the rest urbans

only put your onagers within range (spread out) and bomb away (aim at his onagers, even if you miss it will cause carnage with the rest of his army)
Then move your archers up (spread out in widest setting) aim at his archers first, then the backs of his phallanx
Finally move your urbans up, let them auto fire all 3 spears and move in for the kill

Alternatively go Carthage and get a load of war elephants and charge him

And do not let your missile and artellery on autofire but fire manually.
Take your time for that and take care that you send any of your shots
into the backs of the enemy troops all the time.

Correcting you, his friend isn't a tactician, a noob box is waiting till the enemy attacks and dies.

Use alot of urbans, surround him and pepper them. Archers and onagers are also very handy, heavy onagers. You'll certainly win with that. Also some caphract charges when the enemy is weakend can be handy breaking through a line and killing him from the inside.

Everything everyone mentioned here works great. I personally would combine 3 onagers of any type but heavy if you can, 4 units of HA, 6 heavy cav including a general, and 7 units of the best archers you can get.

And here Scythia or how are they called (orange pants dudes) can come into play.


Or germans. Get chosen archer warbands. They are quite armoured and better in exchange fire fight. Rest gothic cavalry.


Or simply go urban. Creatans carrie littile ammo. And urban's armor is just something you won't break trought from the front that easy.

Your friend...simply...un-describable. Noob-box has been used so many times. It has start from spartans to a large amount of hoplites. BLEH its real easy. Go HA on him. Since he uses hoplites and zero calvary he is totally immobile. Shoot him to oblivion. THE END. Though you should pick your targets carefully.

Archer Auxilia or mounted cavalry will solve the problem , dont forget to use onagers and burn them to a crisp with the fire ammo

Hm. I prefer dismounted cavalry or mounted infantry, but if you can get mounted cavalry to work, I guess they can be useful.

Create your own noob cube and wait for him to get annoyed and he will come to you.

Just kidding, but pretty much what everybody has said here would be effective.
