    Default the perfect army

as anyone knows, an army can have max 20 regiments
now is my question, how many of each type should i take in my army?
this is what i always take

    1x general
    4x cavalry
    5x archers
    8x infantry
    2x artillery (trebuchets, catapults, bombard,....)

now is my question, is this a good tactic? or should i use more infantry? or less infantry??? or something else
can please everyone post their army?

for field battles i usually have the same except only 4 inf. (usually spear men), and 4 Horse archers. I usually use archers that are decent in hand to hand combat like janissary musketeers. its usually hold the enemy, flank them, rain death on them, and then charge them. for field i use dread-lords.
i sometimes use mangonel as artillery.

    2x H. Cavalry
    4x xbowmen
    6x H infantry
7x L infantry, most of them spearmen.

    It depends on your faction.

If playing against Europeans, I'd take more cavalry. If playing against Muslims, I'd take even more cavalry xD

To me the answer is kinda obvious:

There is no such thing as a perfect army.

    Yeah - boring, I know.

KnightOfPortugal has probably the best answer to this. Can't beat 20 generals right?? (++++rep )

Anyway, the right army for you depends on many factors:

    1) Counter the enemy army. Pikes/Spears vs Cavalry, Cavalry vs Infantry, Cavalry archers vs Infantry... you know how it works.

    2) Play your strengths. Bring the best units your faction has (Turks = cavalry archers, France = cavalry, Italian nations = infantry, etc.).

    3) Where the battle takes place. Sieges need more artillery/infantry and less cavalry/archers. Open battles don't require artillery. Mountains requires more stamina, archers if you defend. etc.

What I like to do is push in enemy territory with two, or even three, generals, each holding a good number of units. Before a battle I form the best army composition under my main general, and the "squires" hold the remaining forces close by, able to reinforce if my main stack is attacked.

romanichine has said it best. Play to your strengths. But it is also a bit like Rock Paper Scissors.

While an army of 20 Generals bodyguards may be the ultimate army, they would have problems facing a stack of quality pikemen and spearmen.

Still, your army is ok, but you can drop the siege units and replace them with more cavalry/foot if you are not sieging.

I like to have two armies travelling round together. One mainly infantry with some siege for taking castles and one mainly cavalry and archers for the open field battles. By having two armies going round together with their specialities, firstly if one army gets attacked then you have reinforcements if you need, and secondly the field army can handle enemy reinforcements while your other army is taking settlements.

    1 x General Bodyguard
    6 x Cavalry
    6 x Archers
    7 x Infantry

I rarely use artillery and Im a big cavalry fan. I use it as a key in most of my tactics.
But, I use infantry to engage enemy spearmen so I can keep my Cav from being skewered,

    For a field battle:
    1 General
    2 Knights Templar
    2 Knights Hospitaller
    4 Retinue Longbowmen
5 Dismounted Knights which can also deal with cavalry
    6 Amoured swordsmen

    For field 20 elephants
For siege replace half of them with elephant artillery.
For siege defense add naffatun, pikemen, firethrowers and stake archers.

    I usually have 1 general, 5 crossbowmen, 2 heavy cavalry, 4 halberds, 4 spearmen and 4 infantry
For sieges I replace 2 crossbowmen with peasants, 2 halberds with heavy infantry and 3 crossbowmen with artillery.
For siege defense whatever I happen to have left in the town.

Heh, in fact the perfect army is the best balanced army, an army which is flexible enough and able to counter any other army with a minimum of losses. And it depends on the faction you play with; each faction's armies are balanced in a different sort of way.

My perfect army isn`t a full stack, but several really upgraded and experienced heavy cavalry with a high command and dread general.
For example in early game i destroy armies of up to 5 times the size of my army with just light cavalry and a general. Cavalry micro management ftw.

I usually go pretty light on the spearmen, only 2 units usually, which I use to assist my cavalry or guard my flanks. lots of heavy and shock infantry, a couple of xbows (3-4) and a mix of heavy/missle cavalry.
O merciful God, I have such need of Your mercy now. Not for myself, but for my knights, for this is truly their hour of need. Deliver them from their trials ahead and I will pay You a thousand fold with any sacrifice You ask of me. And if in Your wisdom, You should determine that sacrifice must be my life for theirs; so that they can once again taste the freedom that is so long been denied to them, I will gladly make that covenant. My death will have a purpose. I ask no more than that.
