Default Who here "cheats" at ETW?

I was thinking to myself yesterday that whilst playing ETW and regulary saving my games in between end of turns that I regulary load a previous game if I am surpised attacked by a nation - I thought to myself this is cheating! I have never played a game where I havent loaded a game at leat once becuase one of my best cities was taken by a surprise attack - Has anyone played a game without loading a saved game (except CTDs) - how was the game? I'm interested - I will try it out next game I start.

What I like best of TW war games is dealing with difficult situations where the enemy faction takes my city or wins an important battle, knocking me back.

I never reload a game because the AI took a city by surprise or beat me. In fact I`m happy if the AI is giving me a good fight.

I`ve fought battles where I have been defeated again and again until I have only 2 (and even less) Provinces left and that`s when I put togther all my tactics and resources and fight back. Sometimes I lose, a lot of times I pull it back and go on the offensive to teach my attacker a lesson.

For me, figjhting a losing campaign, coming back and eventually winning is what makes a TW game (or any strategy world game for that matter) sweet for me.

Remember, you are King of your nation. Losing a battle or losing a city does not kill you. Just as in reality, you fight on or make peace. Only when your last city is gone have you been defeated.

This is pretty much verbatim of what I was going to say, so I'll just quote it

Indeed. It is known as a "saved game"

Exactly. If you find yourself in a pickle, fight your way out! What's the point of cheating?

Yep no reloading here, much more fun getting revenge in the long run for short-term set backs!

I don't cheat, and when I CTD I just begin a new campaign.
No heroes, no villains, only conflicting perspectives with regards to a specific object.

A new campaign every 20 mins if i did that. Luckily Napoleon is much more stable (not a single crash yet).

I tend not to reload as i like a challenge but there's been times where things have happened that seemed wrong as a result of flawed game mechanics or bugs and thus unfair. For example the time my reinforcements appeared in the totally wrong place and were cut to bits as they entered the map. Or a partcuarly glitchy siege battle has destroyed my force. It's rare and hard to remember specifics but i've felt justified in using it. Unlike in MTW where i refought the flanders battles 5 or 6 times until i got the outcome i wanted. On the other hand that was a good game with an innate challenge unlike Empire.

In the Civ series, I find myself saving before every battle that I should win (more than 65% chance), since it seems that I always lose the first time . But, in Total War games, since I have complete control over the battles, I know that its my fault and my fault alone if I get surprise attacked, so I just take it like a man.

How can a surprise attack make the game less fun?

I don't cheat at ETW, but I do cheat on ETW quite frequently with other more attractive games.
The extra development time will allow us to finalize and polish Empire, making it the most accomplished and epic of the Total War series." said Kieran Brigden, Studio Communications Manager at The Creative Assembly. "There is a great deal of anticipation around Empire: Total War and we want to ensure that it is the benchmark for strategy games upon its release.

It isn't cheating. I only start from saved games if I have large conquests and don't want to endure conquering them again.
