I just bought M2TW after playing ROMe fr two years. I like both equally. I like how M2 makes the game a lot more complicated, I like the religious war, I like the units and the factions. But I also like Rome. It doesn't look bad. once they went 3D the visuals became functional enough that it doesn't matter. Sure, having a bunhc of clones fighting instead of a little variation among the units is different, but really, don't care. I find rome functional and fun. I love teh Roman civil war and M2tw is missing that.
The ai is just as sutpid as Medieval's.
Well both games are very similar cause using the same engine. Aside from some worser graphics (but as C-Rob said good enough and definitely not bad) and all men in a unit looking the same. And there are obviously no gunpowder units.
But if you are interested in the timeline it is worth it. Similar to M2:TW it offers many superb mods. And the Addon-Barbarian invasion features religion again as well as hordes, an unique concept. Not to mention another unique task - instead of conquering an Empire try holding together the giant Western Roman Empire against all the Barbarians.
Well the AI can be as braindead as in M2:TW (as said above using the same engine). No challenge compared to the first MTW or Shogun. But hey thatīs why there are mods.
RTW has more enjoyable gameplay than MTW2 since calvalry is more effective, phalanx pwns, and everybody loves the diversity while in MTW most european nations have the same units.
One aspect of M2TW gameplay is better: the kill speeds.
Oh boy!
You got not idea how to use M2TW cavalry do you? A well executed charge kills every last unit in an enemy unit, at least in RTW there's usually something left to hack apart after a charge.
Rome is a little faster than MTW2 as well. Units are more responsive and generally dont trundle about like slugs
I vote for R:TW above M2:TW.
Alltought I play both.
cav in medieval 2 tend to die in droves once they get bogged down though. because they cant attack units directly in front of them once they drop their lances/spears
