    Icon1 Question for religious people

Would you still follow your religion if God were proven not to exist?

If not, how can you claim to have true faith? Aren't you just doing things because 'God says so' rather than because you actually believe in them?

EDIT: Gah! I forgot to post a poll!? Gah!
"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

The thing about supernatural claims/assertions/speculations is they can never be disproven, a corner-stone of their "existence" is being unfalsifiable.

That's why some people think they're retarded concepts to begin with.

I suspect proof would matter little. The Bible repeatedly insists that it's man's faith, and not man's reason that leads one to god. So someone devoutly religious would likely just insist that, despite direct proof of god's non-existence being before him, he should still believe in him regardless.

This is something I see a lot of public preachers say again and again anyway. You know, the ones that hundreds if not thousands of people show up to for a single lecture. They keep telling the crowd "to hell with your reason, that will only lead you away from the lord. Hank 1:12 and Bob 19:3 tell you to believe instead".
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

Interestingly enough, I've heard of Orthodox Jews in the scientific community ostensibly following their highly conservative traditions, which is not easy to do, whilst still being atheists.

If it did happen, I'd imagine that people with higher cultural imperatives embedded into their religions, such as Muslims, some Catholics, many Orthodox, Jews, among others, would retain their traditions and faith, but few Protestants.

You are setting up a question that cannot be answerable. How can I answer that my religion would or would not be followed if I had true knowledge that it was false? I would always follow true knowledge. I will also always hold to the faith of that which is not provable but is my belief.

Thank goodness you did not post a poll. Please do not correct this omission. A poll add nothing to this discussion.

... the very act of faith is ignoring evidence because there can't BE evidence.
