Hello, I have no idea what shieldwall does. Atm all i can see is that it constricts the formation. Does shieldwall give bonuses and disadvantages? If so what are these? I notice many dwarven units have it.

Advantage- It increases defense and makes it harder for cavalry and other infantry to break your formation.
Disadvantage- Drastically lowers your movement speed.
Only should be used if you want to hold the line.
I use it as the Elves of Lorien commonly as I build my armies with just Galadhrim Guards and Galadhrim Archers so my guards form a shield wall so my archers can sit back andthe goblins up!

What He said.
There VERY useful for defending breache's and Broken gate's.
I've held a city once with 800 men Agas'nt 3000. ( Just until support arrived )
Anyway
I Held each ring as best as i could. ( Enemys had siege towers / Ladders / Rams )
There was around 3-4 rings.
They easily overrun the first two rings. So i pulled back after killing like 300 of them. After that we all retreated to the second ring while a unit sacrafices itself. ( They actually suvived better then any-one else o.O ) While the rest retreated.
On the second ring we Killed around 800. Dunno what happioned then.
On The third Ring we counter attacked. I Litually fired like 100 arrows. Witch killed a fair few men. While my Cavalry comes out.
After that 3000 slowly reduced to 2000
After About 3 Minutes They retreated. And We Won.
Then support came and we did'nt hear of Mordor Again.
( My previous campaign as mordor )
I held a fortress against 6000 orcs with 1200 gondorian soldiers![]()

I Saw
Its Not About Holding Em Off in the first Ring. Its about Watching that bloody timer. And Making Sure the Enemy Does'nt wipe out your defences
I Once just left my computer on. Hid my men behide the walls. ( Last ring. ) And Walked out the room. Caem back and like 30 men. ( I Was out in the garden for aronud half an hour? ) So YeahIt was pretty worth it. Since they lacked Siege equitment
ah 9/10 i always hold them outside the first wall of the castle, so they cant use there siege weapon, i postion troops outside the gate, to stop ram, and allow archers to got work on there troops, fire arrows will rout them most times, i then have a couple of cav units, 1 for knockin out catapults, and my bodyguard general unit, to track down there general and kill him, dont fight behind yur walls, you can kill alot more this way, also stops you from havin to fight trolls on walls too

lol haha nice! theres like boromir with a death switch, waitin with tons of TNT, if they enter the last line of defence lol,
ah i never fight trolls onw ars or give erm the chance, put 3 squads of infty & 2 cav units outside yur castle, use infty to defend gate and nearby attacks, yur probably loose these guys, but it will buy you the much needed time to use all yur arrows, and make an organised withdraw, by this tactic rarely fails for me, just keep usin yur cav to harass them, keep the enemy disorganised, even if you dont kill any trolls while doin this, thou u shud be able to, with cav charges, you will have killed most of there infty by then, lettin you deal with the trolls a bit easier,
open battles - i elimate trolls first as they run faster there there main force, so you kill erm before the main enemy bulk reaches you,
seige battles - try to kill them out in the open with cav, otherwise just try to deal with killin as much of there inftry as possbile, trolls do rely on there fodder to help rout yur troops
ah, lol, sorry just wafflin, like to share my own tactics, see if anyone as the same
atm, my hardest foe as Gondor is the dwarves, even by usin your top tier units, its hard to clain a decisive victory
im not sure thats right...lol...anyway....
just to prove the effectiveness of the shield wall i ran a full out calvary charge into a dwarf wall....godor calvary to be precise....and i lost most of my horses....dont know if thats supposed to happen...i thought that with them being together they would get owned but no...they get stopped and then slaughted. wonder if anybody else had that happen. anyway hope it helps
The downside. Make sure they don't charge out on their own.... Last time I put shieldwall without guard mode I cried... They auto charged like greenhorns...
I disagree that it's bad for offensive tactics.
group your [Dwarves] in a shieldwall just when they're near the enemy, click on the open space behind the enemy lines and tell your infantry run there. when they're deep into the enemy's ranks click charge...
watch the magic![]()
I use that tactic as well but not with shield wall...
Say if I am waiting too long because the orcs are holding my Elvish warriors at the gates. I just tell them to right right past them and then once my elves are mixed in with the orcs I click attack and the orcs die much faster...
Tell me again why you are fighting those poor midgets... Even my Lothlorien elves don't pick on Dwarves. It isn't a fair fight!! Pick on someone your own size
However I do enjoy watching those slow little heavy armored midgets running across the field gettinged by my rain of arrows!
Stacks of Archers win every battle if your playing as the elves...
Don't get me started on those hobbits. They are like ants compared to the tall elves!!![]()

Yes, you can cut through enemy ranks like butter by tsimply running through them, not with killing many of them but totally breaking their ranks. I did this a lot with dwarves, it's reallly fun: We don't care about the enemy just ignore him and go where ever we like...
Well thats because the dwarves had enough mass to withstand the charge, if they had less mass your cav woulda won, luckily KK actually made the masses so that a formation like shield wall does what it supposed to(save your soldier's lives), and not just grant your own soldiers an earlier death in a compacted death trap![]()

A couple of questions,
I can see how useful shieldwall will be in a siege but how useful will it be in open battle. When you often have just 2 or 3 units capable of shieldwall.
Does shieldwall affect the units attack?
Say you have a full stack and only 3 units can use shieldwall. Try setting up 3 lines. Melee infantry not capable of shieldwall in front. Shieldwall 3 units in shieldwall formation behind them. 3rd. Archers and general. With Cavalry on the sides.
Shieldwall is designed to defend and lowers your unit attack but increases defense. There is only some unique situations when strategys call for shieldwall on offense. But otherwise in open battle when you are the attacker Shield Wall shouldn't be used...![]()
Shield wall increases the glory of the Empire...
that, and - infinitely less important - holds the line against 90% of evil scum
ill tell you what it does, its a kickass shield wall that stops every thing except for trolls and ents from breaking the lines even when your outnembered alot, it stops all infintry charges all the time and you dont loose alot of men, always heve the shieldwall the fron line and have at least for untis in a line using shieldwall just pure shirldwall as a frontline
Wil you play the game? the game of thrones.
