Default When to disband a unit or not ?

I hadn't realised that it was possible to disband a unit until very recently and have been wondering when and if you should and also what units to disband ? So far I've not disbanded any units in the current campaign as most settlements only have a few levy pikemen and peltasts but other settlements I've got at least 3/4 of a stack - againly mainly peltasts, at least 4-6 Syrian Archers and a few phalanx pikemen depeneding which faction they are close and the kind of army they are going to face. Now If you do disband units in a large settlement what do you use to replace them to garrision and keep the peace?

Given no real security threat, the cheapest units possible.

I tend to merge my units rather than disband them where possible, and send them back to be retrained - or build up the local barracks in order to ensure I can retrain them in-situ.

You can merge them? I never knew that, I've conquered most of the World and just discovered this

    I feel like a bit a of a muppet

I disband units when the settlement is stable so doesn't need a large garrison or to replace older style troops - so for example I start with Roman light infantry as a garrison, then they get replaced with light auxilia and when I've built the necessary Villa Romanum, Veteranii but only when the settlement is stable enough to not need a big garrison.

However, I also disband units below about half size, I didn't realise I could merge them

If you disband a unit in one of your settlements, will the population of that settlement increase?

Yes lol I did that one time while playing as the Greek cities. Send a fleet with a nice army and about 4 or 5 full fleets of levy units to Britain. Conquered it and disbanded the levies so the population would get higher.

Seriously, am I the only person who even reads manuals any more? Or listens to the advisors, for that matter?

good strategy only that if they are upgraded I preffer to retrain them even if the cost is higher...

disband is best used for obsolete units and if your economy stagnates...

shortcut to automerge all units in an army is "m"
shortcut to disband is "strg-d" (select 1 or more units and strg-d"

Haven't played in a while, but I disband most of my legions after a major war, like they did in reality.
Just those with a lot of experience and some more to guard the borders are retained.

Occasionally I disband a unit or two when an army has not served with sufficient fervor and I can afford the loss, to represent decimation (only with certain generals for roleplaying purposes).

I also disband most of the levy units when starting a new campaign, and used to colonize small settlements with stacks of levy units.
"The only question that remained was whether the founders knew the final result of their creation, or if they themselves where the victims of a misunderstanding.
In the latter case it was the duty of any thinking human, to press himself into the front of this depraved movement, to perhaps still prevent the extreme, in the former case the founders of this peoples disease must have been true devils; for only in the brain of a monster - not of a human - could the plan for an organisation take meaningfull form, whose purpose must lead toward the end result of a collapse of human culture and thus to the desolation of the world.
In this case only battle remained as a means of final delivery, battle with any weapons that the human mind, intellect and will are able to comprehend, regardless, of whom fate would gift with it's blessing."

well i disband a lot in Europa Barbarorum because the population is so slow in RS you dont need too because solders are available like rabbits so a lost Legion can be easily replaced a turn later but its stilll good

I generally try to avoid disbanding units, the only time I do is when I have little or no chance - i.e. can't resupply the unit, say a Legion I Republican maniple when I'm in a Legion II area and my naval units are in different areas of operations.
When you get right down to it, there's only birth, copulation and death. Everything else is pure bloody guesswork!

i usually never disband units. I retrain them and reap the benifits of their experience. If i get the marian
reforms I might send a full stack of pre marian reform troops to their death on some impossible mission.
This way they atleast did some thing as a last hoorah! and if i dis band em i usually send then to a unpopulated region.
