    Default Launching Pila

Is there any way to target firing pila from my legions without them running into combat afterwards? If I set in guard mode then launch them, will they rush to attack? A second question, how can I launch pila when engaged in melee combat.

Embarassed to ask because I have been playing a long time, but don't know if this is possible.

Click the halt command before they charge in.

Or just tell them to fire at will. But they get to pick the target themselves

It's a waste of pila if the enemy throws in their units first.

Yep. target the enemy unit you want then hit backspace. I'd also avoid using fire at will if possible

Engage the enemies troops with a few units then with the rest press fire at will and they will target all their pila at the un engaged troops.

Genius, what does the backspace do, prevent them from attacking I assuming?

    Backspace triggers the halt button.

Normally, the AI isn't smart enough to use meat shields. Instead, they just bring in everything at once in most cases. For this, you might as well use fire at will.

Sometimes online the opponent will bring a meat shield (i.e. loose formation town watch/peasants) to guard from fire at will pilum strikes. On this case, if you don't have a shield of you're own, I'd just manually direct a discharge at your opponent and then engage.
