    Default changing generals guard

Was wondering how easy it would be to give Dale a mounted guard instead of the archers? Let Bard and perhaps faction heir keep the archers but everyone else gets cavalry.

Another issue has always been the lack of cavalry for dwarves... perhaps they could have a mounted generals guard called something like 'allied cavalrymen' where the general is still a dwarf on his mount with the rest made up of humans from eriador or dale.

Think the las tthread got moved or something cannot find it...

the dwarves do have allied cavalry. it is called dale cavalry and its available as mercenaries in most dale regions

True but those are crappy I think they deserve something decent. The dwarves on the western side have no cavalry and get destroyed by skirmishers and archers which are plentiful in all rebel settlements.

On the plus side it is a good lore explanation as to why they stayed in their fortresses.

What!? Lol crappy dwarves. I can't believe you. You just play them badly.

Crap again. Dwarves like being in the mountains. That's all. And sometimes they journey to see their cousins.

A dwarf general on his war poney, lol.

Got to edu, search for Dale and then go to the Bardian Archers Bodyguard. Remove the entry general_unit from their attributes and add it to the unit you want it to have e.g. Earls.
It should look like this in the end:
    Code:
    type Earls
    dictionary Earls ; Earls
    category cavalry
    class            heavy
    voice_type Heavy
    banner faction main_cavalry
    banner holy crusade
    soldier earls, 30, 0, 1
    officer dale_captain_early_flag
    mount barded horse2
    mount_effect elephant -4, camel -4
    attributes sea_faring, hide_forest, can_withdraw, can_formed_charge, general_unit
    formation 2, 4.4, 3, 6, 3, square
    stat_health 1, 3
    stat_pri 9, 6, no, 0, 0, melee, melee_blade, piercing, sword, 25, 1
    stat_pri_attr no
    stat_sec 0, 0, no, 0, 0, no, melee_simple, blunt, none, 0, 1
    stat_sec_attr no
    stat_pri_armour 10, 3, 5, metal
    stat_sec_armour 0, 0, flesh
    stat_heat 8
    stat_ground -1, -1, -3, -2
    stat_mental 15, normal, trained
    stat_charge_dist 45
    stat_fire_delay 0
    stat_food 60, 300
    stat_cost 1, 980, 350, 100, 100, 980, 4, 170
    armour_ug_levels 4
    armour_ug_models earls
    ownership scotland
    era 0 scotland
    era 1 scotland
    era 2 scotland
    recruit_priority_offset 20
Now all you new generals will start off with Earls as their bodyguard. However, if you recruit Earls now you will get a recruited general IIRC

easier than expected, is it possible to allow bard to keep his archers?

Yes. If you want to change the bodyguards of the generals you have available at the start of the campaign, you'd have to edit descr_strat.

It is possible to have earls as bodyguards, just copy the whole earls section and add general_unit, now you can still recruit them normally as well as having them as bodyguards.

Though this requires a bit more editing.

Okay got it working but I have two problems:

It only works if I remove the bardian archers from Bard

Every family member has 78 earls which seems overpowered. What do I do to make it balanced like the other 'mounted general' factions i.e. 25-30 for minor family members, 40+ for heir and 50+ for leader?

    export_descr_unit.

At the top of the file there's a guide to how to edit the basics of the edu.

You should make a new edu entry and alter the number of men in the unit.

So if you add general_unit in the edu to a unit, without taking it off the original bodyguard, will all new generals have the new bodyguard, will it be mixed, or will nothing happen? If changed the default bodyguard to a new one, would I need to start a new campaign?

The unit which comes first in the edu will be the general unit. In this case it would be Bardian Marksmen.
Afaik you don't have to start a new game. The old generals will keep their bodyguard, the ones that "come to age" after you changed the edu will have the new one.

Hmm, I added general_unit to Mirkwood rangers in the edu, and then whenever I recruited them, I got generals! Is there any way to make it so that Certain starting generals (like legolas) have them as a bodyguard, but then they can be recruited as a normal unit?

You'll need to host your image to a Hosting site - try Imageshack.us, and choose the Direct Link.

To have Legolas have the Mirkwood Rangers as a Bodyguard, open data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/descr_strat.txt (make a copy APU), search for the Legolas Entry, and find the first unit in his army. Replace this with the name for Mirkwood Sentinels. Save (make sure that there is no read only box checked in right click+properties), and play the game. This means that the game will load Legolas to have BG's as Mirkwood Sents, but all Adoptions and Coming of Age will result in Sindar Archers.

Recruiting Mirkwood Sents results in no new general.

If you want all scripted generals to have Mirkwood Archers, search Campaign_script.txt (remove read only and backup), and do the same for all such generals (search "Sindar" and then see if it applies to a General), and also do that for the other Sylvan's in descr_strat.
